Verses I Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDEEFFGGHHIIJJKK LLMMNNOP

O'ERWHELM'D with sorrow and sustaining longA
'The proud man's contumely th' oppressor's wrong 'B
Languid despondency and vain regretC
Must my exhausted spirit struggle yetC
Yes Robb'd myself of all that fortune gaveD
Even of all hope but shelter in the graveD
Still shall the plaintive lyre essay its powersE
To dress the cave of Care with Fancy's flowersE
Maternal Love the fiend Despair withstandF
Still animate the heart and guide the handF
May you dear objects of my anxious careG
Escape the evils I was born to bearG
Round my devoted head while tempests rollH
Yet there where I have treasured up my soulH
May the soft rays of dawning hope impartI
Reviving patience to my fainting heartI
And when its sharp solicitudes shall ceaseJ
May I be conscious in the realms of peaceJ
That every tear which swells my children's eyesK
From sorrows past not present ills ariseK
Then with some friend who loves to share your painL
For 'tis my boast that some such friends remainL
By filial grief and fond remembrance prestM
You'll seek the spot where all my sorrows restM
Recall my hapless days in sad reviewN
The long calamities I bore for youN
And with a happier fate resolve to proveO
How well you merited your mother's loveP
