Ode To Despair Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFGGHIHI JJKKLMLMNNOOKPKPQQRR SOSTUUSS

FROM THE NOVEL OF EMMELINEA
THOU spectre of terrific mienB
Lord of the hopeless heart and hollow eyeC
In whose fierce train each form is seenB
That drives sick Reason to insanityD
I woo thee with unusual prayerE
'Grim visaged comfortless Despair 'F
Approach in me a willing victim findG
Who seeks thine iron sway and calls thee kindG
Ah hide for ever from my sightH
The faithless flatterer Hope whose pencil gayI
Portrays some vision of delightH
Then bids the fairy tablet fade awayI
-
While in dire contrast to mine eyesJ
Thy phantoms yet more hideous riseJ
And Memory draws from Pleasure's wither'd flowerK
Corrosives for the heart of fatal powerK
I bid the traitor Love adieuL
Who to this fond believing bosom cameM
A guest insidious and untrueL
With Pity's soothing voice in Friendship's nameM
The wounds he gave nor Time shall cureN
Nor Reason teach me to endureN
And to that breast mild Patience pleads in vainO
Which feels the curse of meriting its painO
Yet not to me tremendous PowerK
Thy worst of spirit wounding pangs impartP
With which in dark conviction's hourK
Thou strik'st the guilty unrepentant heartP
But of illusion long the sportQ
That dreary tranquil gloom I courtQ
Where my past errors I may still deploreR
And dream of long lost happiness no moreR
To thee I give this tortured breastS
Where Hope arises but to foster painO
Ah lull its agonies to restS
Ah let me never be deceived againT
But callous in thy deep reposeU
Behold in long array the woesU
Of the dread future calm and undismay'dS
Till I may claim the hope that shall not fadeS
