REMOTE from scenes where the o'erwearied mindA
Shrinks from the crimes and follies of mankindA
From hostile menace and offensive boastB
Peace and her train of home born pleasures lostC
To fancy's reign who would not gladly turnD
And lose awhile the miseries they mournE
In sweet oblivion Come then Fancy deignF
Queen of ideal pleasure once againG
To lend thy magic pencil and to bringH
Such lovely forms as in life's happier springH
-
On the green margin of my native WeyI
Before mine infant eyes were wont to playI
And with that pencil teach me to describeJ
The enchanting goddess of the flowery tribeJ
Whose first prerogative it is to chaseK
The clouds that hang on languid beauty's faceK
And while advancing suns and tepid showersL
Lead on the laughing Spring's delicious hoursL
Bid the wan maid the hues of health assumeM
Charm with new grace and blush with fresher bloomM
The vision comes While slowly melt awayI
Night's hovering shades before the eastern rayI
Ere yet declines the morning's humid starN
Fair Fancy brings her in her leafy carN
-
Flora descends to dress the expecting earthO
Awake the germs and call the buds to birthO
Bid each hybernacle its cell unfoldP
And open silken leaves and eyes of goldP
Of forest foliage of the firmest shadeQ
Enwove by magic hands the car was madeQ
Oak and the ample Plane without entwinedA
And Beech and Ash the verdant concave lin'dA
The Saxifrage that snowy flowers embossR
Supplied the seat and of the mural mossR
The velvet footstool rose where lightly restS
Her slender feet in Cypripedium drestS
The tufted rush that bears a silken crownT
The floating feathers of the thistle's downT
-
In tender hues of rainbow lustre dyedS
The airy texture of her robe suppliedS
And wild convolvuli yet half unblownT
Form'd with their wreathing buds her simple zoneT
Some wandering tresses of her radiant hairU
Luxuriant floated on the enamour'd airU
The rest were by the Scandix' points confin'dS
And graced a shining knot her head behindS
While as a sceptre of supreme commandS
She waved the Anthoxanthum in her handS
Around the goddess as the flies that playI
In countless myriads in the western rayI
The sylphs innumerous throng whose magic powersL
Guard the soft buds and nurse the infant flowersL
-
Round the sustaining stems weak tendrils bindS
And save the pollen from dispersing windS
From suns too ardent shade their transient huesV
And catch in odorous cups translucent dewsV
The ruder tasks of others are to chaseK
From vegetable life the insect raceK
Break the polluting thread the spider weavesW
And brush the aphis from th' unfolding leavesW
For conquest arm'd these pigmy warriors wieldS
The thorny lance and spread the hollow shieldS
Of lichen tough or bear as silver brightS
Lunaria's pearly circlet firm and lightS
On the helm'd head the crimson foxglove glowsX
Or Scutellaria guards the martial browsY
-
While the Leontodon its plumage rearsZ
And o'er the casque in waving grace appearsZ
With stern undaunted eye one warlike chiefA2
Grasps the tall club from Arum's blood dropt leafA2
This with the Burdock's hooks annoys his foesX
The purple thorn that borrows from the RoseX
In honeyed nectaries couched some drive awayI
The forked insidious earwig from his preyI
Fearless the scaled libellula assailB2
Dart their keen lances at the encroaching snailB2
Arrest the winged ant on pinions lightS
And strike the headlong beetle in his flightS
Nor less assiduous round their lovely queenT
The lighter forms of female fays are seenT
-
Rich was the purple vest Floscella woreC2
Spun of the tufts the Tradescantia boreC2
The Cistus' flowers minute her temple gracedS
And threads of Yucca bound her slender waistS
From the wild bee whose wond'rous labour weavesW
In artful folds the rose's fragrant leavesW
Was borrow'd fair Petalla's light cymarC2
And the Hypericum with spangling starC2
O'er her fair locks its bloom minute enwreath'dS
Then while voluptuous odours round her breath'dS
Came Nectarynia as the arrowy raysD2
Of lambent fire round pictur'd seraphs blazeD2
So did the Passiflora's radii shedS
Cerulean glory o'er the sylphid's headS
-
While round her form the pliant tendrils twinedS
And clasp'd the scarf that floated on the windS
More grave the para nymph Calyxa drestS
A brown transparent spatha formed her vestS
The silver scales that bound her raven hairC2
Xeranthemum's unfading calyx bearC2
And a light sash of spiral Ophrys press'dS
Her filmy tunic on her tender breastS
But where shall images or words be foundS
To paint the fair ethereal forms that roundS
The queen of flowers attended and the whileE2
Bask'd in her eyes and wanton'd in her smileE2
-
Now towards the earth the gay procession bendsF2
Lo from the buoyant air the car descendsF2
Anticipating then the various yearC2
Flowers of all hues and every month appearC2
From every swelling bulb its blossoms riseG2
Here blow the Hyacinths of loveliest dyesG2
Breathing of heaven and there her royal browsY
Begemmed with pearl the Crown imperial shewsY
Peeps the blue Gentian from the soft'ning groundS
Jonquils and Violets shed their odours roundS
The Honeysuckle rears his scallop'd hornT
A snow of blossoms whiten on the thornT
Here like the fatal fruit to Paris givenT
That spread fell feuds throughout the fabled heavenT
-
The yellow Rose her golden globe displaysY
There lovelier still among the spiny spraysY
Her blushing rivals glow with brighter dyesY
Than paints the summer sun on western skiesY
And the scarce tinged and paler Rose unveilB2
Their modest beauties to the sighing galeB2
Thro' the deep woodland's wild uncultur'd sceneT
Spreads the soft influence of the floral queenT
See a fair pyramid the Chesnut rearC2
Its crimson tassels on the Larch appearC2
The Fir dark native of the sullen NorthH2
Owns her soft sway and slowly springing forthH2
On the rough Oak are buds minute unfurl'dS
Whose giant produce may command the worldS
Each forest thicket feels the balmy airC2
And plants that love the shade are blowing thereC2
-
Rude rocks with Filices and Bryums smileE2
And wastes are gay with Thyme and ChamomileE2
Ah yet prolong the dear delicious dreamI2
And trace her power along the mountain streamI2
See from its rude and rocky source o'erhungH
With female fern and glossy adder's tongueH
Slowly it wells in pure and chrystal dropsY
And steals soft gliding thro' the upland copseY
Then murmuring on along the willowy sidesY
The reed bird whispers and the Halcyon hidesY
While among sallows pale and birchen bowersY
Embarks in Fancy's eye the queen of flowersY
O'er her light skiff of woven bull rush madeS
The Water lily lends a polish'd shadeS
-
While Galium there of pale and silver hueJ2
And Epilobiums on the banks that grewJ2
Form her soft couch and as the Sylphs divideS
With pliant arms the still increasing tideS
A thousand leaves along the stream unfoldS
Amid its waving swords in flaming goldS
The Iris towers and here the ArrowheadS
And water Crowfoot more profusely spreadS
Spangle the quiet current higher thereC2
As conscious of her claims in beauty rareC2
Her rosy umbels rears the flow'ring RushK2
While with reflected charms the waters blushK2
The naiad now the year's fair goddess leadsY
Through richer pastures and more level meadsY
Down to the sea where even the briny sandsY
Their product offer to her glowing handsY
-
For there by sea dews nurs'd and airs marineT
The Chelidonium blows in glaucous greenT
Each refluent tide the thorn'd Eryngium lavesY
And its pale leaves seem tinctured by the wavesY
And half way up the cliff whose rugged browC2
Hangs o'er the ever toiling surge belowE2
Springs the light Tamarisk The summit bareC2
Is tufted by the Statice and thereC2
Crush'd by the fisher as he stands to markH
Some distant signal or approaching barkH
The Saltwort's starry stalks are thickly sownT
Like humble worth unheededS
