ON thy stupendous summit rock sublimeA
That o'er the channel rear'd half way at seaB
The mariner at early morning hailsC
I would recline while Fancy should go forthD
And represent the strange and awful hourE
Of vast concussion when the OmnipotentF
Stretch'd forth his arm and rent the solid hillsG
Bidding the impetuous main flood rush betweenH
-
The rifted shores and from the continentF
Eternally divided this green isleI
Imperial lord of the high southern coastJ
From thy projecting head land I would markK
Far in the east the shades of night disperseL
Melting and thinned as from the dark blue waveM
Emerging brilliant rays of arrowy lightN
Dart from the horizon when the glorious sunO
Just lifts above it his resplendent orbP
Advances now with feathery silver touchedQ
The rippling tide of flood glisten the sandsR
While inmates of the chalky clefts that scarS
Thy sides precipitous with shrill harsh cryT
Their white wings glancing in the level beamU
The terns and gulls and tarrocks seek their foodV
And thy rough hollows echo to the voiceW
-
Of the gray choughs and ever restless dawsX
With clamour not unlike the chiding houndsY
While the lone shepherd and his baying dogZ
Drive to thy turfy crest his bleating flockA2
The high meridian of the day is pastB2
And Ocean now reflecting the calm HeavenO
Is of cerulean hue and murmurs lowC2
The tide of ebb upon the level sandsR
The sloop her angular canvas shifting stillD2
Catches the light and variable airsE2
That but a little crisp the summer seaB
Dimpling its tranquil surfaceF2
Afar offG2
And just emerging from the arch immenseH2
-
Where seem to part the elements a fleetI2
Of fishing vessels stretch their lesser sailsC
While more remote and like a dubious spotJ2
Just hanging in the horizon laden deepK2
The ship of commerce richly freighted makesL2
Her slower progress on her distant voyageM2
Bound to the orient climates where the sunO
Matures the spice within its odorous shellN2
And rivalling the gray worm's filmy toilO2
Bursts from its pod the vegetable downP2
Which in long turban'd wreaths from torrid heatI2
Defends the brows of Asia's countless castsQ2
There the Earth hides within her glowing breastR2
The beamy adamant and the round pearlS2
Enchased in rugged covering which the slaveM
With perilous and breathless toil tears offG2
-
From the rough sea rock deep beneath the wavesT2
These are the toys of Nature and her sportU2
Of little estimate in Reason's eyeT
And they who reason with abhorrence seeB
Man for such gaudes and baubles violateV2
The sacred freedom of his fellow manW2
Erroneous estimate As Heaven's pure airX2
Fresh as it blows on this a rial heightN
Or sound of seas upon the stony strandY2
Or inland the gay harmony of birdsZ2
And winds that wander in the leafy woodsA3
Are to the unadulterate taste more worthB3
Than the elaborate harmony brought outC3
From fretted stop or modulated airsE2
Of vocal science So the brightest gemsD3
Glancing resplendent on the regal crownP2
-
Or trembling in the high born beauty's earE3
Are poor and paltry to the lovely lightN
Of the fair star that as the day declinesF3
Attendant on her queen the crescent moonG3
Bathes her bright tresses in the eastern waveM
For now the sun is verging to the seaB
And as he westward sinks the floating cloudsH3
Suspended move upon the evening galeI3
And gathering round his orb as if to shadeJ3
The insufferable brightness they resignK3
Their gauzy whiteness and more warm'd assumeL3
All hues of purple There transparent goldM3
Mingles with ruby tints and sapphire gleamsN3
And colours such as Nature through her worksO3
Shews only in the ethereal canopyB
Thither aspiring Fancy fondly soarsP3
-
Wandering sublime thro' visionary valesC
Where bright pavilions rise and trophies fann'dY2
By airs celestial and adorn'd with wreathsQ3
Of flowers that bloom amid elysian bowersR3
Now bright and brighter still the colours glowC2
Till half the lustrous orb within the floodS3
Seems to retire the flood reflecting stillD2
Its splendor and in mimic glory drestS3
Till the last ray shot upward fires the cloudsH3
With blazing crimson then in paler lightS3
Long lines of tenderer radiance lingering yieldS3
To partial darkness and on the opposing sideS3
The early moon distinctly rising throwsT3
Her pearly brilliance on the trembling tideS3
-
The fishermen who at set seasons passU3
Many a league off at sea their toiling nightS3
Now hail their comrades from their daily taskV3
Returning and make ready for their ownW3
With the night tide commencing The night tideS3
Bears a dark vessel on whose hull and sailsC
Mark her a coaster from the north Her keelX3
Now ploughs the sand and sidelong now she leansY3
While with loud clamours her athletic crewZ3
Unload her and resounds the busy humA4
Along the wave worn rocks Yet more remoteS3
Where the rough cliff hangs beetling o'er its baseB4
All breathes repose the water's rippling soundS3
Scarce heard but now and then the sea snipe's cryT
Just tells that something living is abroadS3
And sometimes crossing on the moonbright lineK3
-
Glimmers the skiff faintly discern'd awhileI
Then lost in shadowS3
Contemplation hereE3
High on her throne of rock aloof may sitS3
And bid recording Memory unfoldS3
Her scroll voluminous bid her retraceB4
The period when from Neustria's hostile shoreC4
The Norman launch'd his galleys and the bayD4
O'er which that mass of ruin frowns even nowE4
In vain and sullen menace then receivedS3
The new invaders a proud martial raceB4
Of Scandinavia the undaunted sonsF4
Whom Dogon Fier a bras and Humfroi ledS3
To conquest while Trinacria to their powerE
Yielded her wheaten garland and when thouE4
-
Parthenope within thy fertile bayD4
Receiv'd the victorsR3
In the mailed ranksG4
Of Normans landing on the British coastS3
Rode Taillefer and with astounding voiceW
Thunder'd the war song daring Roland sangH4
First in the fierce contention vainly braveM
One not inglorious struggle England madeS3
But failing saw the Saxon heptarchyI4
Finish for ever Then the holy pileI
Yet seen upon the field of conquest roseT3
Where to appease heaven's wrath for so much bloodS3
The conqueror bade unceasing prayers ascendS3
And requiems for the slayers and the slainJ4
But let not modern Gallia form from henceH2
-
Presumptuous hopes that ever thou againK4
Queen of the isles shalt crouch to foreign armsL4
The enervate sons of Italy may yieldS3
And the Iberian all his trophies tornM4
And wrapp'd in Superstition's monkish weedS3
May shelter his abasement and put onN4
Degrading fetters Never never thouE4
Imperial mistress of the obedient seaB
But thou in thy integrity secureO4
Shalt now undaunted meet a world in armsL4
England 'twas where this promontory rearsP4
Its rugged brow above the channel waveM
Parting the hostile nations that thy fameQ4
Thy naval fame was tarnish'd at what timeA
Thou leagued with the Batavian gavest to FranceR4
-
One day of triumph triumph the more loudS3
Because even then so rare Oh well redeem'dS3
Since by a series of illustrious menK4
Such as no other country ever rear'dS3
To vindicate her cause It is a listS3
Which as Fame echoes it blanches the cheekS4
Of bold Ambition while the despot feelsT4
The extorted sceptre tremble in his graspU4
From even the proudest roll by glory fill'dS3
How gladly the reflecting mind returnsV4
To simple scenes of peace and industryB
Where bosom'd in some valley of the hillsG
Stands the lone farm its gate with tawny ricksW4
Surrounded and with granaries and shedsX4
Roof'd with green mosses and by elms and ashI4
-
Partially shaded and not far remov'dS3
The hut of sea flints built the humble homeY4
Of one who sometimes watches on the heightsZ4
When hid in the cold mist of passing cloudsH3
The flock with dripping fleeces are dispers'dS3
O'er the wide down then from some ridged pointS3
That overlooks the sea his eager eyeT
Watches the bark that for his signal waits
To land its merchandize
