NOT in scorn do I reprove theeA
Not in pride thy vows I waiveB
But believe I could not love theeA
Wert thou prince and I a slaveB
These then are thine oaths of passionC
This thy tenderness for meA
Judged even by thine own confessionC
Thou art steeped in perfidyA
Having vanquished thou wouldst leave meA
Thus I read thee long agoD
Therefore dared I not deceive theeA
Even with friendship's gentle showD
Therefore with impassive coldnessE
Have I ever met thy gazeF
Though full oft with daring boldnessE
Thou thine eyes to mine didst raiseF
Why that smile Thou now art deemingD
This my coldness all untrueG
But a mask of frozen seemingD
Hiding secret fires from viewG
Touch my hand thou self deceiverG
Nay be calm for I am soD
Does it burn Does my lip quiverG
Has mine eye a troubled glowD
Canst thou call a moment's colourG
To my forehead to my cheekD
Canst thou tinge their tranquil pallorG
With one flattering feverish streakD
Am I marble What no womanC
Could so calm before thee standH
Nothing living sentient humanC
Could so coldly take thy handH
Yes a sister might a motherG
My good will is sisterlyD
Dream not then I strive to smotherG
Fires that inly burn for theeA
Rave not rage not wrath is fruitlessE
Fury cannot change my mindI
I but deem the feeling rootlessE
Which so whirls in passion's windI
Can I love Oh deeply trulyA
Warmly fondly but not theeA
And my love is answered dulyA
With an equal energyA
Wouldst thou see thy rival HastenC
Draw that curtain soft asideJ
Look where yon thick branches chastenC
Noon with shades of eventideJ
In that glade where foliage blendingD
Forms a green arch overheadJ
Sits thy rival thoughtful bendingD
O'er a stand with papers spreadJ
Motionless his fingers plyingD
That untired unresting penK
Time and tide unnoticed flyingD
There he sits the first of menK
Man of conscience man of reasonC
Stern perchance but ever justJ
Foe to falsehood wrong and treasonC
Honour's shield and virtue's trustJ
Worker thinker firm defenderG
Of Heaven's truth man's libertyJ
Soul of iron proof to slanderG
Rock where founders tyrannyJ
Fame he seeks not but full surelyJ
She will seek him in his homeL
This I know and wait securelyJ
For the atoning hour to comeM
To that man my faith is givenC
Therefore soldier cease to sueG
While God reigns in earth and heavenC
I to him will still be trueG
