THIS last denial of my faithA
Thou solemn Priest hast heardB
And though upon my bed of deathC
I call not back a wordB
Point not to thy Madonna PriestD
Thy sightless saint of stoneE
She cannot from this burning breastF
Wring one repentant moanE
-
Thou say'st that when a sinless childG
I duly bent the kneeH
And prayed to what in marble smiledG
Cold lifeless mute on meH
I did But listen Children springI
Full soon to riper youthJ
And for Love's vow and Wedlock's ringI
I sold my early truthJ
-
'Twas not a grey bare head like thineK
Bent o'er me when I saidL
' That land and God and Faith are mineK
For which thy fathers bled '-
I see thee not my eyes are dimM
But well I hear thee sayN
' O daughter cease to think of himM
Who led thy soul astrayN
-
Between you lies both space and timeO
Let leagues and years prevailP
To turn thee from the path of crimeO
Back to the Church's pale '-
And did I need that thou shouldst tellQ
What mighty barriers riseR
To part me from that dungeon cellQ
Where my loved Walter liesR
-
And did I need that thou shouldst tauntS
My dying hour at lastT
By bidding this worn spirit pantU
No more for what is pastT
Priest must I cease to think of himM
How hollow rings that wordB
Can time can tears can distance dimM
The memory of my lordV
-
I said before I saw not theeH
Because an hour agoneK
Over my eye balls heavilyH
The lids fell down like stoneK
But still my spirit's inward sightW
Beholds his image beamX
As fixed as clear as burning brightW
As some red planet's gleamX
-
Talk not of thy Last SacramentY
Tell not thy beads for meH
Both rite and prayer are vainly spentZ
As dews upon the seaH
Speak not one word of Heaven aboveA2
Rave not of Hell's alarmsB2
Give me but back my Walter's loveA2
Restore me to his armsB2
-
Then will the bliss of Heaven be wonK
Then will Hell shrink awayN
As I have seen night's terrors shunK
The conquering steps of dayN
'Tis my religion thus to loveA2
My creed thus fixed to beH
Not Death shall shake nor Priestcraft breakC2
My rock like constancyH
-
-
Now go for at the door there waitsD2
Another stranger guestF
He calls I come my pulse scarce beatsE2
My heart fails in my breastF
Again that voice how far awayN
How dreary sounds that toneK
And I methinks am gone astrayN
In trackless wastes and loneK
-
I fain would rest a little whileF2
Where can I find a stayN
Till dawn upon the hills shall smileF2
And show some trodden wayN
' I come I come ' in haste she saidL
' 'Twas Walter's voice I heard '-
Then up she sprang but fell back deadL
His name her latest wordB
