Companions Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AB CDCDED AFAFFF GHGIJJ BKBKLK BMBMCM BKBKNK FOFOFO APAPAP| A Tale Of A Grandfather | A |
| By The Author Of Dewy Memories C | B |
| - | |
| - | |
| - | |
| I know not of what we ponder'd | C |
| Or made pretty pretence to talk | D |
| As her hand within mine we wander'd | C |
| Tow'rd the pool by the limetree walk | D |
| While the dew fell in showers from the passion flowers | E |
| And the blush rose bent on her stalk | D |
| - | |
| I cannot recall her figure | A |
| Was it regal as Juno's own | F |
| Or only a trifle bigger | A |
| Than the elves who surround the throne | F |
| Of the Faery Queen and are seen I ween | F |
| By mortals in dreams alone | F |
| - | |
| What her eyes were like I know not | G |
| Perhaps they were blurr'd with tears | H |
| And perhaps in your skies there glow not | G |
| On the contrary clearer spheres | I |
| No as to her eyes I am just as wise | J |
| As you or the cat my dears | J |
| - | |
| Her teeth I presume were pearly | B |
| But which was she brunette or blonde | K |
| Her hair was it quaintly curly | B |
| Or as straight as a beadle's wand | K |
| That I fail'd to remark it was rather dark | L |
| And shadowy round the pond | K |
| - | |
| Then the hand that reposed so snugly | B |
| In mine was it plump or spare | M |
| Was the countenance fair or ugly | B |
| Nay children you have me there | M |
| MY eyes were p'raps blurr'd and besides I'd heard | C |
| That it's horribly rude to stare | M |
| - | |
| And I was I brusque and surly | B |
| Or oppressively bland and fond | K |
| Was I partial to rising early | B |
| Or why did we twain abscond | K |
| All breakfastless too from the public view | N |
| To prowl by a misty pond | K |
| - | |
| What pass'd what was felt or spoken | F |
| Whether anything pass'd at all | O |
| And whether the heart was broken | F |
| That beat under that shelt'ring shawl | O |
| If shawl she had on which I doubt has gone | F |
| Yes gone from me past recall | O |
| - | |
| Was I haply the lady's suitor | A |
| Or her uncle I can't make out | P |
| Ask your governess dears or tutor | A |
| For myself I'm in hopeless doubt | P |
| As to why we were there who on earth we were | A |
| And what this is all about | P |
