I stood upon the PlainA
That had trembled when the slainA
Hurled their proud defiant curses at the battle heated foeB
When the steed dashed right and leftC
Through the bloody gaps he cleftC
When the bridle rein was broken and the rider was laid lowB
-
What busy feet had trodD
Upon the very sodD
Where I marshalled the battalions of my fancy to my aidE
And I saw the combat direF
Heard the quick incessant fireG
And the cannons' echoes startling the reverberating gladeE
-
I saw them one and allH
The banners of the GaulH
In the thickest of the contest round the resolute MontcalmI
The well attended WolfeJ
Emerging from the gulfK
Of the battle's fiery furnace like the swelling of a psalmI
-
I heard the chorus direF
That jarred along the lyreF
On which the hymn of battle rung like surgings of the waveL
When the storm at blackest nightM
Wakes the ocean in affrightM
As it shouts its mighty pibroch o'er some shipwrecked vessel's graveL
-
I saw the broad claymoreN
Flash from its scabbard o'erG
The ranks that quailed and shuddered at the close and fierce attackO
When Victory gave the wordM
Then Scotland drew the swordM
And with arm that never faltered drove the brave defenders backO
-
I saw two great chiefs dieM
Their last breaths like the sighM
Of the zephyr sprite that wantons on the rosy lips of mornP
No envy poisoned dartsQ
No rancour in their heartsQ
To unfit them for their triumph over death's impending scornP
-
And as I thought and gazedM
My soul exultant praisedM
The Power to whom each mighty act and victory are dueM
-
For the saint like Peace that smiledM
Like a heaven gifted childM
And for the air of quietude that steeped the distant viewM
-
The sun looked down with prideM
And scattered far and wideM
His beams of whitest glory till they flooded all the PlainA
The hills their veils withdrewM
Of white and purplish blueM
And reposed all green and smiling 'neath the shower of golden rainA
-
Oh rare divinest lifeR
Of Peace compared with StrifeR
Yours is the truest splendour and the most enduring fameI
All the glory ever reapedM
Where the fiends of battle leapedM
Is harsh discord to the music of your undertoned acclaimI
