O God forgive the erring thoughtA
The erring word and deedB
And in thy mercy hear the ChristC
Who comes to intercedeB
-
My sins like mountain weights of leadD
Weigh heavy on my soulE
I'm bruised and broken in this strifeF
But Thou canst make me wholeE
-
Allay this fever of unrestG
That fights against the WillH
And in Thy still small voice do ThouI
But whisper Peace be stillH
-
Until within this heart of mineJ
Thy lasting peace come downK
Will all the waves of Passion rollE
Each good resolve to drownK
-
We walk in blindness and dark nightL
Through half our earthly wayM
Our clouds of weaknesses obscureN
The glory of the dayM
-
We cannot lead the lives we wouldO
But grope in dumb amazeP
Leaving the straight and flowery pathsQ
To tread the crooked waysP
-
We are as pilgrims toiling onR
Through all the weary hoursS
And our poor hands are torn with thornsT
Plucking life's tempting flowersS
-
We worship at a thousand shrinesU
And build upon the sandsV
Passing the one great Temple andW
The Rock on which it standsV
-
O fading dream of human lifeF
What can this change portendX
I long for higher walks and trueY
Progression without endX
-
Here I know nothing and my searchZ
Can find no secret outA2
I cannot think a single thoughtA
That is not mixed with doubtA2
-
Relying on the higher sourceB2
The influence divineJ
I can but hope that light may dawnC2
Within this soul of mineJ
-
I ask not wisdom such as thatD2
To which the world is proneE2
Nor knowledge ask unless it comeF2
Direct from God aloneE2
-
Send down then God in mercy sendX
Thy Love and Truth to meG2
That I may henceforth walk in lightL
That comes direct from TheeG2
