Dear Carrie were we truly wiseA
And could discern with finer eyesA
And half inspired senseB
The ways of ProvidenceC
-
Could we but know the hidden thingsD
That brood beneath the Future's wingsD
Hermetically sealedE
But soon to be revealedE
-
Would we more blest than we are nowF
In due submission learn to bowF
Receiving on our kneesG
The Omnipotent decreesG
-
That which is just we have And weH
Who lead this round of mysteryH
This dance of strange unrestI
What are we at the bestI
-
Unless we learn to mount and climbJ
Writing upon the page of timeJ
In words of joy or painK
That we've not lived in vainK
-
We all are Ministers of GoodL
And where our mission's understoodL
How many hearts we mustM
Raise trembling from the dustM
-
Oh strong young soul and thinking brainK
Walk wisely through the fair domainK
Where burn the sacred firesN
Of Music's sweet desiresN
-
Cherish thy Gift and let it beH
A Jacob's ladder unto theeH
Down which the Angels comeO
To bring thee dreams of HomeP
-
What were we if the pulse of SongQ
Had never beat nor found a tongueR
To make the Poet knownS
In lands beyond his ownS
-
Take what is said for what is meantT
We sometimes touch the firmamentT
Of starry Thought no moreU
Beyond we may not soarU
-
I speak not of myself but standT
In silence till the Master HandT
Each fluttering thought sets freeH
God holds the golden keyH
-
