That morn our hearts were like artesian wellsA
Both deep and calm and brimming with pure loveB
And in each one like to an April dayC
Truth smiled and wept while Courage wound his hornD
Dispatching echoes that are whispering stillE
Through all the vacant chambers of our soulsF
While Sorrow sat with drooped and aimless wingG
Within the solitary fane of thoughtH
We wished some warlike Joshua were thereI
To make the sun stand still or to put backJ
The dial to the brighter side of timeK
A cloud hung over Couchiching a cloudL
Eclipsed the merry sunshine of our heartsM
We needed no philosopher to teachN
That laughter is not always born of joyO
All's for the best the fair Eliza saidP
And we derived new courage from her lipsQ
That spake the maxim of her trusting heartR
We even smiled at some portentous signS
That signified well if it turn out trueT
Then I'll believe it Heaven works in signsU
More parting words more lingering farewellsA
Pressure of hands and thrilling touch of lipsQ
A waving of white handkerchiefs and LoveB
Grew prayerful and knelt down and weptV
His scattered rosary of human heartsM
-
-
Soon looking back we saw where Ramah layC
Cold wan and cheerless as the race it holdsW
And as we neared the Lake the sun came forthX
As tardily as if the sluggard dayC
Had slept more soundly for the piping stormY
That veering round had flung its challenge outZ
In sullen menace to the western skyA2
Now black with clouds A flash a muffled rollB2
Of elemental passion broke the spellC2
And down on Simcoe fell the sudden rainD2
Veiling the gloomy landscape from our sightE2
Throughout the changeful day alternate cloudL
And sunshine left their traces on our heartsM
Until the evening reared its dreamy pilesF2
Of cloud built ch teaux steeped in gorgeous tintsG2
That from celestial censers are outpouredL
When the grand miracle of sunset drawsH2
Our souls all yearning with a joy divineS
To share the fleeting glory ere it goesI2
To glean new splendors for the ruby mornD
'Tis ever thus with true impassioned loveB
Love's sun like that of day may set and setL
It hath as bright a rising in the mornD
True love has no gray hairs his golden looksJ2
Can never whiten with the snows of timeK
Sorrow lies drear on many a youthful heartL
Like snow upon the evergreens but loveB
Can gather sweetest honey by the wayC
E'en from the carcass of some prostrate griefK2
We have been spoiled with blessings Though the worldL
-
-
Holds nothing dearer than the hope that's fledL
God ever opens up new founts of blissL2
Spiritual Bethsaidas where the soulB2
Can wash the earth stains from its fevered loinsL2
We carve our sorrows on the face of joyO
Reversing the true image we are weakM2
Where strength is needed most and most is givenN2
-
Thus musing as they chatted in the trainD2
The whistle broke my reverie as oneN2
Might be awakened from a truthful dreamO2
The city gas lights flashed into our eyesL2
And we half shrinking from the glare and dinP2
Thought but of two more partings on the mornD
When Love should be enfettered hand and footL
For the long aeon of a human yearQ2
