The Christening Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBBBCCDDEEFGHHIIGJ KKLLFFMNOO

Arrayed a half angelic sightA
In nests of pure baptismal whiteA
The mother to the font doth bringB
The little helpless nameless thingB
With hushes soft and mild caressingB
At once to get a name and blessingB
Close to the babe the priest doth standC
The sacred water at his handC
That must assoil the soul withinD
From every stain of Adam's sinD
The Infant eyes the mystic scenesE
Nor knows what all this wonder meansE
And now he smiles as if to sayF
'I am a Christian made to day 'G
Now frighted clings to nurse's holdH
Shrinking from the water coldH
Whose virtues rightly understoodI
Are as Bethesda's waters goodI
Strange words 'The World the Flesh the Devil 'G
Poor Babe what can it know of evilJ
But we must silently adoreK
Mysterious truths and not exploreK
Enough for him in after timesL
When he shall read these artless rhymesL
If looking back upon this dayF
With easy conscience he can sayF
'I have in part redeemed the pledgeM
Of my baptismal privilegeN
And vow and more will strive to fleeO
All that my sponsors kind renounced for meO
