The Broken Doll Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEF GGHHIIJJ KLMMNNLLOO PIIQQRS

An infant is a selfish spriteA
But what of that the sweet delightA
Which from participation springsB
Is quite unknown to these young thingsB
We elder children then will smileC
At our dear little John awhileC
And bear with him until he seeD
There is a sweet felicityD
In pleasing more than only oneE
Dear little craving selfish JohnF
-
-
He laughs and thinks it a fine jokeG
That he our new wax doll has brokeG
Anger will never teach him betterH
We will the spirit and the letterH
Of courtesy to him displayI
By taking in a friendly wayI
These baby frolics till he learnJ
True sport from mischief to discernJ

Reproof a parent's province isK
A sister's discipline is thisL
By studied kindness to effectM
A little brother's young respectM
What is a doll a fragile toyN
What is its loss if the dear boyN
Who half perceives he's done amissL
Retain impression of the kissL
That followed instant on his cheekO
If the kind loving words we speakO
Of 'Never mind it ' 'We forgive '-
If these in his short memory liveP
Only perchance for half a dayI
Who minds a doll if that should layI
The first impression in his mindQ
That sisters are to brothers kindQ
For thus the broken doll may proveR
Foundation to fraternal loveS
