An Ape is but a trivial beastA
Men count it light and vainB
But I would let them have their thoughtsC
To have my Ape againD
-
-
To love a beast in any sortE
Is no great sign of graceF
But I have loved a flouting Ape'sF
'Bove any lady's faceF
-
-
I have known the power of two fair eyesF
In smile or else in glanceF
And how for I a lover wasF
They make the spirits danceF
-
-
But I would give two hundred smilesF
Of them that fairest beG
For one look of my staring ApeH
That used to stare on meG
-
-
This beast this Ape it had a faceF
If face it might be styledI
Sometimes it was a staring ApeH
Sometimes a beauteous childI
-
-
A Negro flat a Pagod squatJ
Cast in a Chinese mouldK
And then it was a Cherub's faceF
Made of the beaten goldK
-
-
But Time that's meddling meddling stillL
And always altering thingsF
And what's already at the bestM
To alteration bringsF
-
-
That turns the sweetest buds to flowersF
And chops and changes toysF
That breaks up dreams and parts old friendsF
And still commutes our joysF
-
-
Has changed away my Ape at lastN
And in its place conveyedO
Thinking therewith to cheat my sightP
A fresh and blooming maidO
-
-
And fair to sight is she and stillL
Each day doth sightlier growQ
Upon the ruins of the ApeH
My ancient playfellowL
-
-
The tale of Sphinx and Theban jestsF
I true in me perceiveR
I suffer riddles death from darkS
Enigmas I receiveR
-
-
Whilst a hid being I pursueF
That lurks in a new shapeH
My darling in herself I missF
And in my ape the apeH
-
-
