It is not always to the strongA
Victorious battle shall belongA
This found Goliath huge and tallB
Mightiest giant of them allB
Who in the proud Philistian hostC
Defi d Israel with boastC
-
-
With loud voice Goliath saidD
'Hear armed Israel gather dE
And in array against us setF
Ye shall alone by me be metF
For am not I a PhilistineG
What strength may be compared to mineH
-
-
'Choose ye a man of greatest mightI
And if he conquer me in fightI
Then we will all servants beE
King of Israel unto theeE
But if I prove the victor thenJ
Shall Saul and all his arm d menJ
Bend low beneath Philistian yoke '-
Day by day these words he spokeK
Singly traversing the groundL
But not an Israelite was foundL
To combat man to man with himM
Who such prodigious force of limbM
Displayed Like to a weaver's beamN
The ponderous spear he held did seemN
In height six cubits he did passO
And he was armed all o'er in brassO
-
-
Him we will leave awhile and speakP
Of one the soft down on whose cheekP
Of tender youth the tokens bareQ
Ruddy he was and very fairQ
David the son of Jesse heE
Small sized yet beautiful to seeE
Three brothers had he in the bandR
Of warriors under Saul's commandR
Himself at home did private keepS
In Bethlem's plains his father's sheepS
-
-
Jesse said to this his sonT
'David to thy brothers runT
Where in the camp they now abideU
And learn what of them may betideU
These presents for their captains takeV
And of their fare inquiries make '-
With joy the youth his sire obeyedW
David was no whit dismayedW
When he arriv d at the placeX
Where he beheld the strength and faceX
Of dread Goliath and could hearY
The challenge Of the people nearZ
Unmoved he asked what should be doneT
To him who slew that boasting oneT
Whose words such mischiefs did forebodeA2
To the armies of the living GodB2
-
-
'The king ' they unto David sayC2
'Most amply will that man repayC2
He and his father's house shall beE
Evermore in Israel freeE
With mighty wealth Saul will endowD2
That man and he has made a vowD2
Whoever takes Goliath's lifeE2
Shall have Saul's daughter for his wife '-
-
-
His eldest brother who had heardF2
His question was to anger stirredF2
Against the youth for as he thoughtG2
Things out of his young reach he soughtG2
Said he 'What moved thee to come hereY
To question warlike men say whereQ
And in whose care are those few sheepS
That in the wilderness you keepS
I know thy thoughts how proud thou artH2
In the haughtiness of thy heartH2
Hoping a battle thou mayst seeE
Thou comest hither down to me '-
-
-
Then answered Jesse's youngest sonT
In these words 'What have I doneT
Is there not cause ' Some there which heardF2
And at the manner of his wordF2
Admired report this to the kingI2
By his command they David bringI2
Into his presence Fearless thenJ
Before the king and his chief menJ
He shows his confident designH
To combat with the PhilistineG
Saul with wonder heard the youthJ2
And thus addressed him 'Of a truthJ2
No power thy untried sinew hathK2
To cope with this great man of Gath '-
-
-
Lowly David bowed his headD
And with firm voice the stripling saidD
'Thy servant kept his father's sheepS
Rushing from a mountain steepS
There came a lion and a bearQ
The firstlings of my flock to tearQ
Thy servant hath that lion killedL2
And killed that bear when from the fieldM2
Two young lambs by force they seizedN2
The Lord was mercifully pleasedN2
Me to deliver from the pawO2
Of the fierce bear and cruel jawO2
Of the strong lion I shall slayC2
The unrighteous Philistine this dayC2
If God deliver him alsoP2
To me ' He ceased The king said 'GoI2
Thy God the God of Israel beE
In the battle still with thee '-
-
-
David departs unarmed saveQ2
A staff in hand he chanced to haveR2
Nothing to the fight he tookI2
Save five smooth stones from out a brookI2
These in his shepherd's scrip he placedS2
That was fastened round his waistS2
With staff and sling alone he meetsT2
The arm d giant who him greetsT2
With nought but scorn Looking askanceU2
On the fair ruddy countenanceV2
Of his young enemy 'Am IW2
A dog that thou comest here to tryW2
Thy strength upon me with a staff '-
Goliath said with scornful laughX2
'Thou comest with sword with spear with shieldM2
Yet thou to me this day must yieldM2
The Lord of Hosts is on my sideU
Whose armies boastful thou'st defiedU
All nations of the earth shall hearY
He saveth not with shield and spear '-
-
-
Thus David spake and nigher wentY2
Then choosing from his scrip he sentY2
Out of his slender sling a stoneZ2
The giant uttered fearful moanZ2
The stone though small had pierc d deepS
Into his forehead endless sleepS
Giving Goliath and thus diedU
Of Philistines the strength and prideU
