Rhyme Scheme: AABCDEFGHHIIJJIIKKLM NNKKIIIIIILLIO

David and his three captains boldA
Kept ambush once within a holdA
It was in Adullam's caveB
Nigh which no water they could haveC
Nor spring nor running brook was nearD
To quench the thirst that parched them thereE
Then David king of IsraelF
Straight bethought him of a wellG
Which stood beside the city gateH
At Bethlem where before his stateH
Of kingly dignity he hadI
Oft drunk his fill a shepherd ladI
But now his fierce Philistian foeJ
Encamped before it he does knowJ
Yet ne'er the less with heat opprestI
Those three bold captains he addrestI
And wished that one to him would bringK
Some water from his native springK
His valiant captains instantlyL
To execute his will did flyM
Those three brave men the ranks broke throughN
Of arm d foes and water drewN
For David their belov d kingK
At his own sweet native springK
Back through their enemies they hasteI
With the hard earned treasure gracedI
What with such danger they had soughtI
With joy unto their king they broughtI
But when the good king David foundI
What they had done he on the groundI
The water poured 'Because ' said heL
'That it was at the jeopardyL
Of your three lives this thing ye didI
That I should drink it God forbid 'O
