Cleanliness Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDEEFFGGHAIIJJKK LLIIMMNNOOPP QQRREE

Come my little Robert nearA
Fie what filthy hands are hereB
Who that e'er could understandC
The rare structure of a handC
With its branching fingers fineD
Work itself of hands divineD
Strong yet delicately knitE
For ten thousand uses fitE
Overlaid with so clear skinF
You may see the blood withinF
And the curious palm disposedG
In such lines some have supposedG
You may read the fortunes thereH
By the figures that appearA
Who this hand would choose to coverI
With a crust of dirt all overI
Till it looked in hue and shapeJ
Like the fore foot of an apeJ
Man or boy that works or playsK
In the fields or the highwaysK
May without offence or hurtL
From the soil contract a dirtL
Which the next clear spring or riverI
Washes out and out for everI
But to cherish stains impureM
Soil deliberate to endureM
On the skin to fix a stainN
Till it works into the grainN
Argues a degenerate mindO
Sordid slothful ill inclinedO
Wanting in that self respectP
Which does virtue best protectP
-
-
All endearing cleanlinessQ
Virtue next to godlinessQ
Easiest cheapest needfull'st dutyR
To the body health and beautyR
Who that's human would refuse itE
When a little water does itE
