Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EFAG HIH CJKJ L MNIn a stage coach where late I chanced to be | A |
A little quiet girl my notice caught | B |
I saw she looked at nothing by the way | C |
Her mind seemed busy on some childish thought | D |

I with an old man's courtesy addressed | E |
The child and called her pretty dark eyed maid | F |
And bid her turn those pretty eyes and see | A |
The wide extended prospect 'Sir ' she said | G |
- | |
- | |
'I cannot see the prospect I am blind ' | - |
Never did tongue of child utter a sound | H |
So mournful as her words fell on my ear | I |
Her mother then related how she found | H |

- | |
Her child was sightless On a fine bright day | C |
She saw her lay her needlework aside | J |
And as on such occasions mothers will | K |
For leaving off her work began to chide | J |

The sun shone bright upon her when she spoke | M |
And yet her eyes received no ray of light | N |
