'Fie upon'tA
All men are false I think The date of loveB
Is out expired its stories all grown staleC
O'erpast forgotten like an antique taleC
Of Hero and Leander 'D

All are not false I knew a youth who diedE
For grief because his Love proved soF
And married with anotherG
I saw him on the wedding dayH
For he was present in the church that dayH
In festive bravery deckedI
As one that came to grace the ceremonyA
I marked him when the ring was givenJ
His Countenance never changedK
And when the priest pronounced the marriage blessingL
He put a silent prayer up for the brideE
For so his moving lip interpretedM
He came invited to the marriage feastN
With the bride's friendsO
And was the merriest of them all that dayH
But they who knew him best called it feigned mirthP
And others saidQ
He wore a smile like death upon his faceR
His presence dashed all the beholders' mirthP
And he went away in tearsS
What followed thenT
O thenT
He did not as neglected suitors useU
Affect a life of solitude in shadesV
But livedW
In free discourse and sweet societyA
Among his friends who knew his gentle nature bestX
Yet ever when he smiledY
There was a mystery legible in his faceR
But whoso saw him said he was a manZ
Not long for this worldA2
And true it was for even thenT
The silent love was feeding at his heartB2
Of which he diedE
Nor ever spoke word of reproachC2
Only he wished in death that his remainsD2
Might find a poor grave in some spot not farE2
From his mistress' family vault being the placeR
Where one day Anna should herself be laidF2
