Reservations Confirmed Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABC DDE FGE DHI JKL LML HHC NHH OHPThe ticket settles on my desk a paper tongue | A |
pronouncing quot Go away quot a flattened seed | B |
from which a thousand mile leap through the air can grow | C |
- | |
It's pure potential a vacation to be | D |
the way an apple is a pie to be | D |
a bullet is a death to be Or is the future | E |
- | |
pressed into it inalterably woven between | F |
the slick fibers like secret threads | G |
from the U S Treasury Is my flight number | E |
- | |
already flashing as cameras grind and the newly | D |
bereaved moan Or does it gleam under Arrivals | H |
digits turned innocuous as those that didn't | I |
- | |
win the raffle for a new Ford truck | J |
If somewhere I'm en route now am I | K |
praying the winged ballpoint I'm strapped into | L |
- | |
will write on Denver's runway quot Safe and Sound quot | L |
Was my pocket picked in Burbank | M |
and I've just noticed at thirty thousand feet | L |
- | |
Am I smiling watching the clouds' icefields | H |
melt to smoky wisps revealing lakes | H |
like Chinese dragons embroidered in blue below | C |
- | |
Lifting my ticket do I hold a bon voyage | N |
or boiling jet streams roaring thunderstorms | H |
the plane bounced like a boat on cast iron seas | H |
- | |
then the lightning flash the dizzy plunge | O |
perfectly aware amid the shrieks and prayers | H |
that live or die I won't survive the fall | P |
