Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EEFFGGHHII FFFFJJEEDDKK LLAADDMNOADDKK

All the hills and vales alongA
Earth is bursting into songA
And the singers are the chapsB
Who are going to die perhapsB
O sing marching menC
Till the valleys ring againC
Give your gladness to earth's keepingD
So be glad when you are sleepingD
-
Cast away regret and rueE
Think what you are marching toE
Little live great passF
Jesus Christ and BarabbasF
Were found the same dayG
This died that went his wayG
So sing with joyful breathH
For why you are going to deathH
Teeming earth will surely storeI
All the gladness that you pourI
-
Earth that never doubts nor fearsF
Earth that knows of death not tearsF
Earth that bore with joyful easeF
Hemlock for SocratesF
Earth that blossomed and was gladJ
'Neath the cross that Christ hadJ
Shall rejoice and blossom tooE
When the bullet reaches youE
Wherefore men marchingD
On the road to death singD
Pour gladness on earth's headK
So be merry so be deadK
-
From the hills and valleys earthL
Shouts back the sound of mirthL
Tramp of feet and lilt of songA
Ringing all the road alongA
All the music of their goingD
Ringing swinging glad song throwingD
Earth will echo still when footM
Lies numb and voice muteN
On marching men onO
To the gates of death with songA
Sow your gladness for earth's reapingD
So you may be glad though sleepingD
Strew your gladness on earth's bedK
So be merry so be deadK
