the night I was going to dieA
I was sweating on the bedB
and I could hear the cricketsC
and there was a cat fight outsideD
and I could feel my soul dropping down through theE
mattressF
and just before it hit the floor I jumped upG
I was almost too weak to walkH
but I walked around and turned on all the lightsI
and then I went back to bedB
and dropped it down again andJ
I was upG
turning on all the lightsI
I had a year old daughterK
and I felt sure she wouldn't want me deadB
otherwise it wouldn't haveL
matteredM
but all that nightN
nobody phonedO
nobody came by with a beerP
my girlfriend didn't phoneQ
all I could hear were the crickets and it wasR
hotS
and I kept working at itT
getting up and downU
until the first of the sun came through the windowV
through the bushesW
and then I got on the bedB
and the soul stayedX
inside at last andJ
I sleptY
now people come byA
beating on the doors and windowsZ
the phone ringsA2
the phone rings again and againB2
I get great letters in the mailC2
hate letters and love lettersD2
everything is the same againB2
