stuck in the rain on the freeway p mA
these are the lucky ones these are theB
dutifully employed most with their radios on as loudC
as possible as they try not to think or rememberD
-
this is our new civilization as menE
once lived in trees and caves now they liveF
in their automobiles and on freeways asG
-
the local news is heard again and again whileH
we shift from first gear to second and back to firstI
-
there's a poor fellow stalled in the fast lane ahead hoodJ
up he's standing against the freeway fenceK
a newspaper over his head in the rainL
-
the other cars force their way around his car pull out intoM
the next lane in front of cars determined to shut them offN
-
in the lane to my right a driver is being followed by aB
police car with blinking red and blue lights he surelyO
can't be i speeding i asG
-
suddenly the rain comes down in a giant wash and all theB
cars stop andP
-
even with the windows up I can smell somebody's clutchQ
burningR
-
I just hope it's not mine asG
-
the wall of water diminishes and we go back into firstI
gear we are all stillS
a long way from home as I memorizeT
the silhouette of the car in front of me and the shape of theB
-
driver's head orU
whatV
I can see of it above the headrest whileH
his bumper sticker asks meO
HAVE YOU HUGGED YOUR KID TODAYW
-
suddenly I have an urge to screamX
as another wall of water comes down and theB
man on the radio announces that there will be a percentY
chance of showers tomorrow nightZ
