They are building a houseA
half a block downB
and I sit up hereC
with the shades downB
listening to the soundsD
the hammers pounding in nailsE
thack thack thack thackF
and then I hear birdsG
and thack thack thackF
and I go to bedH
I pull the covers to my throatI
they have been building this houseA
for a month and soon it will haveJ
its people sleeping eatingF
loving moving aroundK
but somehowL
nowL
it is not rightM
there seems a madnessN
men walk on top with nailsE
in their mouthsO
and I read about Castro and CubaP
and at night I walk byQ
and the ribs of the house showR
and inside I can see cats walkingF
the way cats walkF
and then a boy rides by on a bicycleS
and still the house is not doneT
and in the morning the menU
will be backF
walking around on the houseA
with their hammersV
and it seems people should not build housesW
anymoreX
it seems people should not get marriedY
anymoreX
it seems people should stop workingF
and sit in small roomsZ
on nd floorsA2
under electric lights without shadesB2
it seems there is a lot to forgetC2
and a lot not to doD2
and in drugstores markets barsE2
the people are tired they do not wantF2
to move and I stand there at nightM
and look through this house and theP
house does not want to be builtG2
through its sides I can see the purple hillsH2
and the first lights of eveningF
and it is coldI2
and I button my coatI
and I stand there looking through the houseA
and the cats stop and look at meJ2
until I am embarrasedI
and move North up the sidewalkF
where I will buyQ
cigarettes and beerK2
and return to my roomL2
