we had goldfish and they circled around and aroundA
in the bowl on the table near the heavy drapesB
covering the picture window andC
my mother always smiling wanting us allD
to be happy told me 'be happy Henry 'E
and she was right it's better to be happy if youF
canG
but my father continued to beat her and me several times a week whileH
raging inside his foot two frame because he couldn'tI
understand what was attacking him from withinJ
-
my mother poor fishK
wanting to be happy beaten two or three times aL
week telling me to be happy 'Henry smileH
why don't you ever smile '-
-
and then she would smile to show me how and it was theL
saddest smile I ever sawM
-
one day the goldfish died all five of themN
they floated on the water on their sides theirO
eyes still openP
and when my father got home he threw them to the catQ
there on the kitchen floor and we watched as my motherR
smiledS
