Free as a bird and joyfully my heartA
Soared up among the rigging in and outB
Under a cloudless sky the ship rolled onC
Like an angel drunk with brilliant sunD
-
That dark grim island there which would that beE
Cythera we're told the legendary isleF
Old bachelors tell stories of and smileF
There's really not much to it you can seeE
-
O place of many a mystic sacramentG
Archaic Aphrodite's splendid shadeH
Lingers above your waters like a scentI
Infusing spirits with an amorous moodJ
-
Worshipped from of old by every nationD
Myrtle green isle where each new bud disclosesK
Sighs of souls in loving adorationD
Breathing like incense from a bank of rosesK
-
Or like a dove roo cooing endlesslyE
No Cythera was a poor infertile rockL
A stony desert harrowed by the shriekM
Of gulls And yet there was something to seeE
-
This was no temple deep in flowers and treesN
With a young priestess moving to and froO
Her body heated by a secret glowO
Her robe half opening to every breezeN
-
But coasting nearer close enough to landP
To scatter flocks of birds as we passed byQ
We saw a tall cypress shaped thing at handP
A triple gibbet black against the skyQ
-
Ferocious birds each perched on its own mealR
Were madly tearing at the thing that hungS
And ripened each its filthy beak a drillT
Made little bleeding holes to root amongS
-
The eyes were hollowed Heavy guts cascadingU
Flowed like water halfway down the thighsV
The torturers though gorged on these vile joysW
Had also put their beaks to use castratingU
-
The corpse A pack of dogs beneath its feetX
Their muzzles lifted whirled and snapped and gnawedY
One bigger beast amidst this jealous lotZ
Looked like an executioner with his guardA2
-
O Cytherean child of this fair climeB2
Silently you suffered these attacksC2
Paying the penalty for whatever actsD2
Of infamy had kept you from a tombB2
-
Grotesquely dangling somehow you brought onC
Violent as vomit rising from the chestE2
Strong as a river bilious to tasteF2
A flow of sufferings I'd thought long goneG2
-
Confronted with such dear remembered freightH2
Poor devil now it was my turn to feelR
A panther's slavering jaws a beak's cruel drillT
Once it was my flesh they loved to eatX
-
The sky was lovely and the sea divineI2
but something thick and binding like a shroudJ2
Wrapped my heart in layers of black and bloodK2
Henceforth this allegory would be mineI2
-
O Venus On your isle what did I seeE
But my own image on the gallows treeE
O God give me the strength to contemplateH2
My own heart my own body without hateH2
