The Ragman's Wine Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABC DDEE FFGF HHII JFEE FFKK FFLL GGMM

Often beneath a street lamp's reddish lightA
Where wind torments the glass and flame by nightA
Where mankind swarms in stormy turbulenceB
Within a suburb's muddy labyrinthC
-
One comes upon a shaking ragman whoD
Staggers against the walls as poets doD
And disregardful of policemen's spiesE
Pours from his heart some glorious enterpriseE
-
Swearing his oaths he dictates laws he's madeF
To vanquish evil bring the victims aidF
And there beneath the sky a canopyG
Grows drunk upon his own sublimityF
-
Yes and these men harassed by household strifeH
Tortured by age bruised by the blows of lifeH
Under their heaps of rubbish burdened downI
The dregs the vomit of this teeming townI
-
Appear again redolent of the jarJ
With their companions bleached and battle scarredF
Moustaches like the rags of banneretsE
Arches of triumph rise before their stepsE
-
A solemn magic flags and flowers tooF
And in this orgy dazzling to the viewF
Of cheers of bugles drums the sun aboveK
They glorify a people drunk with loveK
-
And so it is like Pactolus of oldF
For fickle Humankind wine rolls with goldF
By human throat wine finds a voice to singL
And reigns by all its gifts a proper kingL
-
To drown the spite and dull the lethargyG
Of damned old men who die in secrecyG
Remorseful God gave sleep to every oneM
Man added wine true scion of the SunM
