Allegorical Statue in the Style of the RenaissanceA
-
for Ernest Christophe sculptorB
-
Let us observe this prize of Tuscan charmC
In how the muscles of the body flowD
Those holy sisters Grace and Strength aboundE
This woman this extraordinary pieceF
Divinely robust admirably slimG
Was made to be enthroned on sumptuous bedsH
As entertainment for a pope or princeI
-
Also observe the fine voluptuous smileJ
Where Self conceit parades its ecstasyK
This long sly languorous and mocking gazeL
This dainty visage with its filmy veilM
Each trait of which cries out triumphantlyK
'Pleasure invites Me and I wear Love's crown '-
In this creation of such majestyK
Excitement flows from her gentilityK
Let us approach and look from every sideN
-
O blasphemy of art fatal surpriseO
This woman fashioned to embody blissP
Is at the top a monster with two headsH
-
But no it's just a mask a trick designQ
This visage lit by an exquisite airR
And look see here how cruelly it is clenchedS
The undissembling face of the true headT
Turned to the shelter of the face that liesO
O beauty how I pity you the greatU
Stream of your tears ends in my anxious heartV
Your lie transports me and my soul drinks upW
The seas brought forth by Sorrow from your eyesO
-
But what has made her cry A beauty whoX
Could have all mankind conquered at her feetY
What secret pain gnaws at her hardy tlankZ
-
The reason fool she cries is that she's livedA2
And that she lives But what she most deploresB2
What makes her tremble even to her kneesC2
Is that tomorrow she'll be living stillD2
Tomorrow every day And so will weK
