Morning Twilight Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDDEFGGDDHIJIKKIL MMNIOPDD

Reveille was sounding on barrack squaresA
and the wind of dawn blew on lighted stairsA
It was the hour when a swarm of evil visionsB
torments swarthy adolescents when pillows humC
when a bloodshot eye throbbing and quiveringD
the lamp makes a reddened stain on the morningD
when the soul by dull sour body bowed downE
enacts the struggle between lamp and dawnF
Like a tearful face that the breeze wipes dryG
the air s filled with the frisson of things that flyG
and man is tired of writing woman with lovingD
The chimneys here and there began smokingD
The women of pleasure with their bleary eyesH
and gaping mouths were sleeping stupefiedI
poor old women with chilled and meagre breastsJ
blew the embers then fingers roused from restI
It was the hour when frozen with money scarcerK
the pains of women in childbirth grew fiercerK
and like a sob cut short by a surge of bloodI
a cock crow far away broke through the fogL
a sea of mist bathed the buildings dying menM
in the depths of the workhouse groaned againM
emitting their death rattles in ragged breathsN
Debauchees tired by their efforts headed for restI
Shivering dawn in a robe of pink and greenO
made her way slowly along the deserted SeineP
and sombre Paris eyes rubbed and wateringD
groped for its tools an old man labouringD
