Evening Twilight Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCBBDDEEFGHIJJKL MNBLOOPPBQRSTTBBUV

Here s the criminal s friend delightful eveningA
come like an accomplice with a wolf s lopingA
slowly the sky s vast vault hides each featureB
and restless man becomes a savage creatureB
Evening sweet evening desired by him who can sayC
without his arms proving him a liar TodayC
we ve worked It refreshes this evening hourB
those spirits that savage miseries devourB
the dedicated scholar with heavy headD
the bowed workman stumbling home to bedD
Yet now unhealthy demons rise againE
clumsily in the air like busy menE
beat against sheds and arches in their flightF
And among the wind tormented gas lightsG
Prostitution switches on through the streetsH
opening her passageways like an ant heapI
weaving her secret tunnels everywhereJ
like an enemy planning a coup she s thereJ
burrowing into the wombs of the city s miresK
like a worm stealing from Man what it desiresL
Here there you catch the kitchens whistlesM
the orchestras droning the theatres yellsN
low dives where gambling s all the pleasureB
filling with whores and crooks their partnersL
and the thieves who show no respite or mercyO
will soon be setting to work as they tenderlyO
they too toil at forcing safes and doorwaysP
to live clothe their girls for a few more daysP
Collect yourself my soul at this grave hourB
and close your ears to the rising howlQ
It s now that the pains of the sick increaseR
Dark Night clasps them by the throat they reachS
their journey s end the common pit s abandonT
the hospital fills with their sighs Many a oneT
will never return to their warm soup by the fireB
by the hearth at evening next to their heart s desireB
And besides the majority have never knownU
never having lived the gentleness of homeV
