Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EFCF EGHG GIJI AGCG GGKG ECLC CGGG CMNM CGGG COAO GGAG CPIP CQRQ GSCSCome under my cloak my darling | A |
Thou little Norwegian main | B |
Nor wind nor rain nor rolling sea | C |
Shall chill or make thee afraid | D |
- | |
Come close little blue eyed maiden | E |
Nestle within my arm | F |
Thought the lightning leaps and the thunder peals | C |
We shall be safe from harm | F |
- | |
Swift from the dim horizon | E |
The dark sails scud for the land | G |
Look how the rain cloud drops its fringe | H |
About us on either hand | G |
- | |
And high from our plunging bowsprit | G |
Dashes the cold white spray | I |
And storm and tumult fill the air | J |
And trouble the summer day | I |
- | |
But thou fearest nothing darling | A |
Thought the tempest mutter and brood | G |
Though the wild wind tosses they bright brown locks | C |
And flutters thy grass green snood | G |
- | |
I kiss they wise wide forehead | G |
While the thunder rolls so grand | G |
And I hold the curve of they lovely cheek | K |
In the hollow of my hand | G |
- | |
And I watch the sky and the ocean | E |
And I study they gentle face | C |
Its lines of sweetness and power | L |
Thy type of they strong Norse race | C |
- | |
And I wonder what thy life will be | C |
Thou dear and charming child | G |
Who hast drifted so far across the world | G |
To a home so lone and wild | G |
- | |
Rude and rough and sad perhaps | C |
Anxious and full of toil | M |
But I think no sorrow or hardship | N |
Thine inner peace can spoil | M |
- | |
For better than kingly fortunes | C |
Is the wealth that thou dost hold | G |
A nature perfectly balanced | G |
A beauty of heart untold | G |
- | |
Thou wilt open the door of patience | C |
When sorry shall come and knock | O |
But to every evil unworthy thing | A |
Wilt thou the gates fast lock | O |
- | |
So shall thy day be blessed | G |
Whatever may be thy lot | G |
But what I am silently pondering | A |
Thou understandest not | G |
- | |
And liftest to me thy steadfast eyes | C |
Calm as if heaven looked through | P |
Do all the maidens in Norway | I |
Have eyes so clear and blue | P |
- | |
See darling where in the distance | C |
The cloud breaks up in the sky | Q |
And lets a ray of sunshine fall | R |
Where our far off islands lie | Q |
- | |
White they gleam and the sea grows bright | G |
And silver shines the foam | S |
A little space and our anchor drops | C |
In the haven of Love and Home | S |
