Regret Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFG HIHI AJAJ KLKL MNMN LOLP

SOFTLY Death touched her and she passed awayA
Out of this glad bright world she made more fairB
Sweet as the apple blossoms when in MayA
The orchards flush of summer grown awareB
-
All that fresh delicate beauty gone from sightC
That gentle gracious presence felt no moreD
How must the house be emptied of delightC
What shadows on the threshold she passed o erE
-
She loved me Surely I was grateful yetF
I could not give her back all she gave meG
Ever I think of it with vain regretF
Musing upon a summer by the seaG
-
Remembering troops of merry girls who pressedH
About me clinging arms and tender eyesI
And love like scent of roses With the restH
She came to fill my heart with new surpriseI
-
The day I left them all and sailed awayA
While o er the calm sea neath the soft gray skyJ
They waved farewell she followed me to sayA
Yet once again her wistful sweet good byJ
-
At the boat s bow she drooped her light green dressK
Swept o er the skiff in many a graceful foldL
Her glowing face bright with a mute caressK
Crowned with her lovely hair of shadowy goldL
-
And tears she dropped into the crystal brineM
For me unworthy as we slowly swungN
Free of the mooring Her last look was mineM
Seeking me still the motley crowd amongN
-
O tender memory of the dead I holdL
So precious through the fret and change of yearsO
Were I to live till Time itself grew oldL
The sad sea would be sadder for those tearsP
