From out the desolation of the NorthA
An iceberg took it awayB
From its detaining comrades breaking forthA
And traveling night and dayB
-
At whose command Who bade it sail the deepC
With that resistless forceD
Who made the dread appointment it must keepC
Who traced its awful courseD
-
To the warm airs that stir in the sweet SouthE
A good ship spread her sailsF
Stately she passed beyond the harbor's mouthE
Chased by the favoring galesF
-
And on her ample decks a happy crowdG
Bade the fair land good byH
Clear shone the day with not a single cloudG
In all the peaceful skyH
-
Brave men sweet women little children brightI
For all these she made roomJ
And with her freight of beauty and delightI
She went to meet her doomJ
-
Storms buffeted the iceberg spray was sweptK
Across its loftiest heightI
Guided alike by storm and calm it keptK
Its fatal path arightK
-
Then warmer waves gnawed at its crumbling baseL
As if in piteous pleaM
The ardent sun sent slow tears down its faceL
Soft flowing to the seaM
-
Dawn kissed it with her tender rose tints EveN
Bathed it in violetK
The wistful color o'er it seemed to grieveN
With a divine regretK
-
Whether Day clad its clefts in rainbows dimO
And shadowy as a dreamP
Or Night through lonely spaces saw it swimO
White in the moonlight's gleamP
-
Ever Death rode upon its solemn heightsQ
Ever his watch he keptK
Cold at its heart through changing days and nightsQ
Its changeless purpose sleptK
-
And where afar a smiling coast it passedK
Straightway the air grew chillR
Dwellers thereon perceived a bitter blastK
A vague report of illR
-
Like some imperial creature moving slowS
Meanwhile with matchless graceL
The stately ship unconscious of her foeS
Drew near the trysting placeL
-
For still the prosperous breezes followed herT
And half the voyage was o'erT
In many a breast glad thoughts began to stirT
Of lands that lay beforeU
-
And human hearts with longing love were dumbV
That soon should cease to beatK
Thrilled with the hope of meetings soon to comeV
And lost in memories sweetK
-
Was not the weltering waste of water wideK
Enough for both to sailW
What drew the two together o'er the tideK
Fair ship and iceberg paleW
-
There came a night with neither moon nor starX
Clouds draped the sky in blackY
With fluttering canvas reefed at every sparX
And weird fire in her trackY
-
The ship swept on a wild wind gathering fastK
Drove her at utmost speedK
Bravely she bent before the fitful blastK
That shook her like a reedK
-
helmsman turn thy wheel Will no surmiseZ
Cleave through the midnight drearX
No warning of the horrible surpriseZ
Reach thine unconscious earX
-
She rushed upon her ruin Not a flashA2
Broke up the waiting darkB2
Dully through wind and sea one awful crashA2
Sounded with none to markB2
-
Scarcely her crew had time to clutch despairX
So swift the work was doneC2
Ere their pale lips could frame a speechless prayerX
They perished every oneC2
