We Have Been Friends Together Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEAE AFGFHEAE AIJKLEAE

WE have been friends togetherA
In sunshine and in shadeB
Since first beneath the chestnut treesC
In infancy we playedB
But coldness dwells within thy heartD
A cloud is on thy browE
We have been friends togetherA
Shall a light word part us nowE
-
We have been gay togetherA
We have laugh d at little jestsF
For the fount of hope was gushingG
Warm and joyous in our breastsF
But laughter now hath fled thy lipH
And sullen glooms thy browE
We have been gay togetherA
Shall a light word part us nowE
-
We have been sad togetherA
We have wept with bitter tearsI
O er the grass grown graves where slumber dJ
The hopes of early yearsK
The voices which are silent thereL
Would bid thee clear thy browE
We have been sad togetherA
Oh what shall part us nowE
