ROSY child with forehead fairA
Coral lip and shining hairA
In whose mirthful clever eyesB
Such a world of gladness liesB
As thy loose curls idly strayingC
O'er thy mother's cheek while playingC
Blend her soft lock's shadowy twineD
With the glittering light of thineD
Who shall say who gazes nowE
Which is fairest she or thouE
-
In sweet contrast are ye metF
Such as heart could ne'er forgetF
Thou art brilliant as a flowerG
Crimsoning in the sunny hourG
Merry as a singing birdH
In the green wood sweetly heardH
-
Restless as if fluttering wingsI
Bore thee on thy wanderingsI
Ignorant of all distressJ
Full of childhood's carelessnessK
-
She is gentle she hath knownL
Something of the echoed toneL
Sorrow leaves where'er it goesM
In this world of many woesM
On her brow such shadows areN
As the faint cloud gives the starN
Veiling its most holy lightO
Tho' it still be pure and brightO
And the colour in her cheekP
To the hue on thine is weakP
Save when flush'd with sweet surpriseB
Sudden welcomes light her eyesB
And her softly chisel'd faceQ
But for living moving graceQ
Looks like one of those which beamR
In th' Italian painter's dreamR
Some beloved Madonna bendingC
O'er the infant she is tendingC
-
Holy bright and undefiledO
Mother of the Heaven born childO
Who tho' painted strangely fairA
Seems but made for holy prayerA
Pity tears and sweet appealS
And fondness such as angels feelS
Baffling earthly passion's sighT
With serenest majestyO
-
Oh may those enshrouded yearsU
Whose fair dawn alone appearsU
May that brightly budding lifeV
Knowing yet not sin nor strifeV
Bring its store of hoped for joyW
Mother to thy laughing boyW
And the good thou dost impartO
Lies deep treasured in his heartO
That when he at length shall striveX
In the bad world where we liveX
THY sweet name may still be blestO
As one who taught his soul true restO
