Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGFHDHD IJKJLDMD NOPOQDQD GRGRSDSDLOW she lies who blest our eyes | A |
Through many a sunny day | B |
She may not smile she will not rise | A |
The life hath past away | B |
Yet there is a world of light beyond | C |
Where we neither die nor sleep | D |
She is there of whom our souls were fond | C |
Then wherefore do we weep | D |
- | |
The heart is cold whose thoughts were told | E |
In each glance of her glad bright eye | F |
And she lies pale who was so bright | G |
She scarce seemed made to die | F |
Yet we know that her soul is happy now | H |
Where the saints their calm watch keep | D |
That angels are crowning that fair young brow | H |
Then wherefore do we weep | D |
- | |
Her laughing voice made all rejoice | I |
Who caught the happy sound | J |
There was gladness in her very step | K |
As it lightly touched the ground | J |
The echoes of voice and step are gone | L |
There is silence still and deep | D |
Yet we know she sings by God's bright throne | M |
Then wherefore do we weep | D |
- | |
The cheek's pale tinge the lid's dark fringe | N |
That lies like a shadow there | O |
Were beautiful in the eyes of all | P |
And her glossy golden hair | O |
But though that lid may never wake | Q |
From its dark and dreamless sleep | D |
She is gone where young hearts do not break | Q |
Then wherefore do we weep | D |
- | |
That world of light with joy is bright | G |
This is a world of woe | R |
Shall we grieve that her soul hath taken flight | G |
Because we dwell below | R |
We will bury her under the mossy sod | S |
And one long bright tress we'll keep | D |
We have only given her back to God | S |
Ah wherefore do we weep | D |
