LOW she lies who blest our eyesA
Through many a sunny dayB
She may not smile she will not riseA
The life hath past awayB
Yet there is a world of light beyondC
Where we neither die nor sleepD
She is there of whom our souls were fondC
Then wherefore do we weepD
-
The heart is cold whose thoughts were toldE
In each glance of her glad bright eyeF
And she lies pale who was so brightG
She scarce seemed made to dieF
Yet we know that her soul is happy nowH
Where the saints their calm watch keepD
That angels are crowning that fair young browH
Then wherefore do we weepD
-
Her laughing voice made all rejoiceI
Who caught the happy soundJ
There was gladness in her very stepK
As it lightly touched the groundJ
The echoes of voice and step are goneL
There is silence still and deepD
Yet we know she sings by God's bright throneM
Then wherefore do we weepD
-
The cheek's pale tinge the lid's dark fringeN
That lies like a shadow thereO
Were beautiful in the eyes of allP
And her glossy golden hairO
But though that lid may never wakeQ
From its dark and dreamless sleepD
She is gone where young hearts do not breakQ
Then wherefore do we weepD
-
That world of light with joy is brightG
This is a world of woeR
Shall we grieve that her soul hath taken flightG
Because we dwell belowR
We will bury her under the mossy sodS
And one long bright tress we'll keepD
We have only given her back to GodS
Ah wherefore do we weepD
