Written on the occasion of the death of the infant daughter of Her Grace the Duchess of SutherlandA
I-
-
HARK through the proudly decorated hallsB
How strangely sounds the voice of bitter woeC
Where steps that dread their echo as it fallsB
Steal silently and sadly to and froC
There wither'd lies the bud so lately givenD
And beautiful in grief as when she smiledE
Bow'd 'neath the unexpected stroke of HeavenD
The mourning Mother watches o'er her ChildE
II-
-
'Tis her last Watch Sleep seals those infant lidsF
Dark fall the lashes on that roseleaf cheekG
But oh the look is there which Hope forbidsF
Of Death of Death those heavy eyelids speakG
'Tis her last Watch no more that gentle handH
With cautious love shall curtain out the lightI
No more that graceful form shall mutely standH
And bless thy slumbers thro' the shadowy nightI
III-
-
Hush'd is the innocent heart which throbbing painJ
Vain hope and vain regret had never movedK
The God who gave hath claim'd his gift againL
And angels welcome her on earth so lovedM
Yet still of hope and fear the endless strifeN
Within that Mother's bosom faintly swellsO
Still still she gazes on and dreams of lifeN
Though the fond falsehood Reason's pow'r repelsO
IVN
-
Unheard each word of comfort faintly fallsB
From lips whose tones in other days were dearP
Her infant's smile is all her heart recallsB
Her infant's voice is all her heart can hearQ
She clasps its hand the feverish glow of hersR
Wakes into warmth the freezing current's flowC
She bends her sobbing breath a ringlet stirsR
With mimic life upon its pallid browS
VN
-
Oh what a mournful thing is human loveN
In happier days of hope and bliss gone by-
The Mother's heart with pitying throb would moveN
If but a teardrop dimm'd that laughing eye-
And now she prays that Heaven the boon may giveN
To hear from those pale lips a cry of painJ
Aught that could bid her sinking soul reviveN
And tell the mourner thou wert hers againL
VI-
-
Ah never more that dream of hope may beN
The summer breeze among the boughs shall waveN
The summer sun beam bright o'er land and leaN
But thou no spring shall wake thee from the graveN
No more those little rosy lips shall greetT
With brightly sudden smile her look of prideU
No more with falt'ring steps those fairy feetT
Shall totter onward to her cherish'd sideU
VIIN
-
All all is over See with painful startV
She wakens from her trance to feel the wholeW
And know the pang even from thy corse to partV
Thou vainly guarded treasure of her soulW
The hand that ah so often hath caress'dX
Aids now to place thee in thy narrow bedY
The last wild kiss upon thy cheek is press'dX
The last fond tear upon thy coffin shedY
And all is hush'd but oft thro' Life's dull trackZ
When time her present sorrow hath beguiledE
That pale sweet brow shall dimly bring us backZ
The Mother's last Watch o'er her fairy ChildE
