IA
-
OH watch me watch me stillB
Thro' the long night's dreary hoursC
Uphold by thy firm willB
Worn Nature's sinking powersC
IIA
-
While yet thy face is thereD
The loose locks round it flyingE
So young and fresh and fairD
I feel not I am dyingE
IIIA
-
Stoop down and kiss my browF
The shadows round me closingE
Warn me that dark and lowG
I soon shall be reposingE
IVH
-
But while those pitying eyesI
Are bending thus above meJ
In vain the death dews riseI
Thou dost regret and love meJ
VJ
-
Then watch me thro' the nightK
Thro' my broken fitful slumberL
By the pale lamp's sickly lightK
My dying moments numberL
VIH
-
Thy fond and patient smileM
Shall soothe my painful wakingE
Thy voice shall cheer me whileM
The slow grey dawn is breakingE
VIIH
-
The battle slain whose thirstN
No kindly hand assuagesI
Whose low faint farewells burstN
Unheard while combat ragesI
VIIIH
-
The exiled near whose bedO
Some vision'd form seems weepingE
Whose steps shall never treadO
The land where he lies sleepingE
IXI
-
The drown'd whose parting breathP
Is caught by wild winds onlyJ
Theirs is the bitter deathP
Beloved for they die lonelyJ
XI
-
But thus tho' rack'd to lieH
Thou near tho' full of sadnessI
Leaves still e'en while I dieH
A lingering gleam of gladnessI
XII
-
I feel not half my painQ
When to mine thy fond lip pressesI
I warm to life againR
Beneath thy soft caressesI
XIII
-
Once more oh yet once moreS
Fling fling thy white arms round meI
As oft in days of yoreS
Their gentle clasp hath bound meI
XIIII
-
And hold me to that breastT
Which heaves so full with sorrowG
Who knows where I may restT
In the dark and blank to morrowG
XIVH
-
Ah weep not it shall beI
An after thought to cheer theeI
That while mine eyes could seeI
And while mine ears could hear theeI
XVH
-
Thy voice and smile were stillB
The spells on which I doatedT
And thou through good and illB
To me and mine devotedT
XVIH
-
And calmly by my tombU
When the low bright day declinethI
And athwart the cypress gloomU
The mellow sunset shinethI
XVIIH
-
Thou'lt sit and think of HimV
Who of Heaven's immortal splendourG
Had a dream on earth though dimV
In thy love so pure and tenderG
XVIIIH
-
Who scarcely feels thy touchW
Whom thy voice can rouse no longerG
But whose love on earth was suchW
That only death was strongerG
XIXI
-
Yes sit but not in tearsI
Thine eyes in faith upliftingE
From thy lot of changeful yearsI
To the Heaven where naught is shiftingE
XXI
-
From this world where all who loveH
Are doomed alike to severG
To the glorious realms aboveH
Where they dwell in peace for everG
XXII
-
And then such hope shall beamX
From the grave where I lie sleepingE
This bitter hour shall seemX
Too vague and far for weepingE
XXIII
-
And grief ah hold me nowF
My fluttering pulse is failingE
The death dews chill my browF
The morning light is palingE
XXIIII
-
I seek thy gaze in vainQ
Earth reels and fades before meI
I die but feel no painQ
Thy sweet face shining o'er meI
