FAINTER her slow step falls from day to dayB
Death's hand is heavy on her darkening browC
Yet doth she fondly cling to earth and sayB
'I am content to die but oh not nowC
Not while the blossoms of the joyous springD
Make the warm air such luxury to breatheE
Not while the birds such lays of gladness singD
Not while bright flowers around my footsteps wreatheE
Spare me great God lift up my drooping browC
I am content to die but oh not now '-

-
The spring hath ripen'd into summer timeF
The season's viewless boundary is pastG
The glorious sun hath reach'd his burning primeF
Oh must this glimpse of beauty be the lastG
'Let me not perish while o'er land and leaH
With silent steps the lord of light moves onI
Nor while the murmur of the mountain beeH
Greets my dull ear with music in its toneJ
Pale sickness dims my eye and clouds my browC
I am content to die but oh not now '-

Summer is gone and autumn's soberer huesK
Tint the ripe fruits and gild the waving cornL
The huntsman swift the flying game pursuesK
Shouts the halloo and winds his eager hornL
'Spare me awhile to wander forth and gazeM
On the broad meadows and the quiet streamN
To watch in silence while the evening raysM
Slant thro' the fading trees with ruddy gleamN
Cooler the breezes play around my browC
I am content to die but oh not now '-
IVO
-
The bleak wind whistles snow showers far and nearP
Drift without echo to the whitening groundQ
Autumn hath pass'd away and cold and drearP
Winter stalks on with frozen mantle boundQ
Yet still that prayer ascends 'Oh laughinglyH
My little brothers round the warm hearth crowdR
Our home fire blazes broad and bright and highO
And the roof rings with voices glad and loudR
Spare me awhile raise up my drooping browP
I am content to die but oh not now '-
VH
-
The spring is come again the joyful springD
Again the banks with clustering flowers are spreadS
The wild bird dips upon its wanton wingD
The child of earth is number'd with the deadS
'Thee never more the sunshine shall awakeT
Beaming all redly thro' the lattice paneU
The steps of friends thy slumbers may not breakT
Nor fond familiar voice arouse againV
Death's silent shadow veils thy darken'd browP
Why didst thou linger thou art happier now '-
