The Careless Word Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EFGGHHDD IJKKLLDD MMNNOPDD QRSSTUDD VJWWB DD NNXYWWDDA WORD is ringing thro' my brain | A |
It was not meant to give me pain | A |
It had no tone to bid it stay | B |
When other things had past away | B |
It had no meaning more than all | C |
Which in an idle hour fall | C |
It was when first the sound I heard | D |
A lightly uttered careless word | D |
- | |
That word oh it doth haunt me now | E |
In scenes of joy in scenes of woe | F |
By night by day in sun or shade | G |
With the half smile that gently played | G |
Reproachfully and gave the sound | H |
Eternal power thro' life to wound | H |
There is no voice I ever heard | D |
So deeply fix'd as that one word | D |
- | |
When in the laughing crowd some tone | I |
Like those whose joyous sound is gone | J |
Strikes on my ear I shrink for then | K |
The careless word comes back again | K |
When all alone I sit and gaze | L |
Upon the cheerful home fire blaze | L |
Lo freshly as when first 'twas heard | D |
Returns that lightly uttered word | D |
- | |
When dreams bring back the days of old | M |
With all that wishes could not hold | M |
And from my feverish couch I start | N |
To press a shadow to my heart | N |
Amid its beating echoes clear | O |
That little word I seem to hear | P |
In vain I say while it is heard | D |
Why weep 'twas but a foolish word | D |
- | |
It comes and with it come the tears | Q |
The hopes the joys of former years | R |
Forgotten smiles forgotten looks | S |
Thick as dead leaves on autumn brooks | S |
And all as joyless though they were | T |
The brightest things life's spring could share | U |
Oh would to God I ne'er had heard | D |
That lightly uttered careless word | D |
- | |
It was the first the only one | V |
Of those which lips for ever gone | J |
Breathed in their love which had for me | W |
Rebuke of harshness at my glee | W |
And if those lips were here to say | B |
'Beloved let it pass away ' | - |
Ah then perchance but I have heard | D |
The last dear tone the careless word | D |
- | |
Oh ye who meeting sigh to part | N |
Whose words are treasures to some heart | N |
Deal gently ere the dark days come | X |
When earth hath but for one a home | Y |
Lest musing o'er the past like me | W |
They feel their hearts wrung bitterly | W |
And heeding not what else they heard | D |
Dwell weeping on a careless word | D |
