IA
-
HUSH moaning autumn wind be still be stillB
Thy grieving voice forbiddeth hearts to restC
We hear thee sweeping down the lonely hillB
And mournful thoughts crowd o'er the human breastC
Why wilt thou haunt us with thy voice unkindD
Sadd'ning the earth Hush moaning autumn windD
IIA
-
Toss not the branching trees so wildly highA
Filling the forest with thy dreary soundE
Without thy aid the hues of summer dieA
And the sear leaves fall scatter'd to the groundE
Thou dost but hasten needlessly unkindD
The winter's task thou moaning autumn windD
IIIA
-
Sweep not thro' Ocean's caves with hollow roarF
Driving our fair ships to some rock bound strandG
While the vex'd sea foams wrathful to the shoreF
The seaman's wife looks shuddering from the landG
And widow'd hearts for many a year shall findD
Death in thy voice thou moaning autumn windD
IVA
-
Round our calm dwellings when our hearths are gayH
Roam not oh howling spirit of DespairI
As tho' thou wert a creature seeking preyH
And where the land look'd richest found it thereI
We have enough of memories unkindD
Without thy voice thou moaning autumn windD
VA
-
Thee the sad mourner lists and turns to weepJ
In the blank silence of her lonely homeK
The sick man hears and starts from broken sleepJ
And the night wanderer sighs compell'd to roamK
While the poor shiver for their huts unkindD
Bar thee not out thou searching autumn windD
VIA
-
Back to the barren hill and lonely glenL
Here let the wandering of thy echoes ceaseM
Sadly thou soundest to the hearts of menL
Hush thy wild voice and let the earth have peaceM
Or if no chain thy restless will can bindD
Sweep thro' the desert moaning autumn windD
