I STAND beside the waves the mournful wavesB
Where thou didst stand in silence and in fearC
For thou wert train'd by custom's haughty slavesB
And love from such as I disdain'd to hearD
Yet with the murmur of the echoing seaE
And the monotonous billows rolling onF
Were mingled sounds of weeping for in theeE
All nature was not harden'd into stoneG
And from the shore there came a distant chimeH
From the old village clock ah since that dayI
Like a dull passing bell each stroke of timeH
Falls on my heart and in the ocean sprayI
A voice of lamentation seems to dwellJ
As in that bitter hour of agonised farewellJ
