WHERE is the minstrel's native land	A
Where the flames of light and feeling glow	B
Where the flowers are wreathed for beauty's brow	C
Where the bounding heart swells strong and high	D
With holy hopes which may not die	D
There is my native land	A

What is that bright land's music name	E
Ere it bent its neck to a foreign yoke	F
It was called the land of the broad strong oak	F
The land of the free the German land	A
But her sons lie slain by the stranger's hand	A
And she weeps sad tears of shame	E
	-
Why does the minstrel's country weep	G
That the hurricane's rage hath bowed the pride	H
Of those who should stem the rising tide	H
That her princes quail and that none will hear	I
Her holy words of might and fear	J
Therefore my land must weep	G
	-
To whom does the minstrel's country call	K
It calls to the silent heavenly powers	L
With despair as the thunder darkly lowers	L
For its freedom for those who should break its chain	M
For the hand that never strikes in vain	M
To these doth my country call	K
	-
For what does the minstrel's country sigh	D
That the bloodhound may hunt beyond the bound	N
Of the soil which brave hearts make holy ground	N
That the serf may cease and our sons be free	O
Or those who have borne them cease to be	O
For this does my country sigh	D
	-
And still doth the minstrel's country hope	P
Her hope is firm for her cause is good	Q
That her brave will rise and her true in blood	R
And that God the avenger our fathers' God	S
Will mark the tears that bedew her sod	S
Such is my country's hope	P
