YES we were happy once and careA
My jocund heart could ne'er surpriseB
My treasures were her golden hairA
Her ruby lips her brilliant eyesB
My treasures were alas departC
Ye visions of what used to beD
Cursed be the heart the cruel heartC
That stole my Mary's love from meD
-
Dark are my joyless days and thouE
Dost thou too dream and dreaming weepF
Or careless of thy broken vowE
Unholy revels dost thou keepF
No Mary no we loved too wellG
Such deep oblivion cannot beD
Cursed be the lips where guile could dwellG
To lure thy love away from meD
-
It cannot be ah haply whileH
With wild reproach I greet thy nameI
Thy ruby lip hath ceased to smileH
Thy happy head is bowed with shameI
Haply with haggard want opprestC
Thou weepest where no eye may seeD
Cursed be the spoiler's cruel breastC
But oh my Mary heaven shield theeD
