I CANNOT love thee tho' thy soulA
Be one which all good thoughts controlA
Altho' thy eyes be starry brightB
And the gleams of golden lightB
Fall upon thy silken hairC
And thy forehead broad and fairC
Something of a cold disgustD
Wonderful and most unjustD
Something of a sullen fearE
Weighs my heart when thou art nearE
And my soul which cannot twineF
Thought or sympathy with thineF
With a coward instinct triesG
To hide from thy enamour'd eyesG
Wishing for a sudden blindnessH
To escape those looks of kindnessH
-
Sad she folds her shivering wingsI
From the love thy spirit bringsI
Like a chain d thing caress'dJ
By the hand it knows the bestJ
By the hand which day by dayK
Visits its imprison'd stayK
Bringing gifts of fruit and blossomL
From the green earth's plenteous bosomL
All but that for which it pinesM
In those narrow close confinesM
With a sad and ceaseless sighN
Wild and wing d LibertyO
-
Can it be no instinct dwellsP
In th' immortal soul which tellsP
That thy love oh human brotherQ
Is unwelcome to anotherQ
Can the changeful wavering eyeN
Raised to thine in forced replyN
Can the cold constrain d smileR
Shrinking from thee all the whileR
Satisfy thy heart or proveS
Such a likeness of true loveT
-
Seems to me that I should guessU
By what a world of bitternessH
By what a gulf of hopeless careC
Our two hearts divided wereQ
Seems to me that I should knowV
All the dread that lurk'd belowV
By want of answer foundW
In the voice's trembling soundW
By the unresponsive gazeX
By the smile which vainly playsX
In whose cold imperfect birthY
Glows no fondness lives no mirthY
By the sigh whose different toneZ
Hath no echo of thine ownZ
By the hand's cold clasp which stillA2
Held as not of its free willA2
Shrinks as it for freedom yearn'dB2
That my love was unreturn'dB2
-
When thy tongue ah woe is meO
Whispers love vows tenderlyO
Mine is shaping all unheardB2
Fragments of some withering wordB2
-
Which by its complete farewellC2
Shall divide us like a spellC2
And my heart beats loud and fastB2
Wishing that confession pastB2
And the tide of anguish risesD2
Till its strength my soul surprisesE2
And the reckless words unspokenF2
Nearly have the silence brokenF2
With a gush like some wild riverQ
'Oh depart depart for ever '-
-
But my faltering courage failsG2
And my drooping spirit quailsG2
So sweet earnest looks thy smileR
Full of tenderness the whileR
And with such strange pow'r are giftedB2
The eyes to which my own are liftedB2
So my faint heart dies awayK
And my lip can nothing sayK
And I long to be aloneZ
For I weep when thou are goneH2
-
Yes I weep but then my soulA
Free to ponder o'er the wholeA
Free from fears which check'd its thoughtB2
And the pain thy presence broughtB2
Whispers me the useless lieN
'For thy love he will not dieN
Such pity is but vanity '-
And I bend my weary headB2
O'er the tablets open spreadB2
Whose fair pages me inviteB2
All I dared not say to writeB2
And my fingers take the penI2
And my heart feels braced againI2
With a resolute intentB2
But ere yet that page be sentB2
Once I view the written wordsJ2
Which must break thy true heart's chordsK2
And a vision piercing brightB2
Rises on my coward sightB2
Of thy fond hand gladly takingL2
What must set thy bosom achingL2
While too soon the brittle sealM2
Bids the page the worst revealM2
Blending in thy eager gazeX
Scorn and anguish and amazeX
-
Powerless then my hand reposesX
On the tablet which it closesX
With a cold and shivering senseX
Born of Truth's omnipotenceX
And my weeping blots the leavesX
And my sinking spirit grievesX
Humbled in that bitter hourQ
By the very consciousness of powerQ
What am I that I should beO
Such a source of woe to theeO
What am I that I should dareC
Thus to play with thy despairC
And persuade myself that thouN2
Wilt not bend beneath the blowV
-
Rather should my conscience moveS
Me to think of this vain loveT
Which my life of peace beguilesX
As a tax on foolish smilesX
Which like light not meant for oneF2
Who wandering in the dark aloneZ
Hath yet been tempted by its rayK
To turn aside and lose his wayK
Binds me by their careless sinO2
To take the misled wanderer inO2
-
And I praise thee as I goV
Wandering weary full of woeV
To my own unwilling heartB2
Cheating it to take thy partB2
By rehearsing each rare meritB2
Which thy nature doth inheritB2
To myself their list I giveP2
Most prosaic positiveP2
How thy heart is good and trueQ2
And thy face most fair to viewQ2
How the powers of thy mindB2
Flatterers in the wisest findB2
And the talents God hath givenF2
Seem as held in trust for HeavenF2
Labouring on for noble endsX
Steady to thy boyhood's friendsX
Slow to give or take offenceX
Full of earnest eloquenceX
Hopeful eager gay of cheerE
Frank in all thy dealings hereR2
-
Ready to redress the wrongS2
Of the weak against the strongS2
Keeping up an honest prideB2
With those the world hath deifiedB2
But gently bending heart and browN2
To the helpless and the lowV
How in brief there dwells in theeO
All tht's generous and freeO
All that may most aptly moveS
My Spirit to an answering loveT
-
But in vain the tale is toldB2
Still my heart lies dead and coldB2
Still it wanders and rebelsX
From the thought that thus compelsX
And refuses to rejoiceX
Save in unconstrain emacr d choiceX
-
Therefore when thine eyes shall readB2
This my book oh take thou heedB2
In the dim lines written hereR2
All shall be explained and clearE
-
All my lips could never speakT2
When my heart grew coward weakT2
All my hand could never writeB2
Tho' I planned it day and nightB2
All shall be at length confestB2
And thou'lt forgive and let me restB2
None but thou and I shall knowV
Whose the doom and whose the woeV
None but thou and I shall shareC
In the secret printed thereC
It shall be a secret stillA2
Tho' all look on it at willA2
And the eye shall read in vainU2
What the heart cannot explainU2
Each one baffled in his turnV2
Shall no more its aim discernV2
Than a wanderer who might lookW2
On some wizard's magic bookW2
Of the darkly worded spellC2
Where deep hidden meanings dwellC2
Memory fancy they shall taskX2
This sad riddle to unmaskX2
Or with bold conjectural fameY2
Fit the pages with a nameY2
-
But nothing shall they understandB2
And vainly shall the stanger's handB2
Essay to fling the leaves apartB2
Which bear MY message to THY heartB2
