As When From Dreams Awaking Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABAAAA CDCDEF EF AEAEGHGI EBEBEJEJ KEKE LMLM

AS when from dreams awakingA
The dim forms float awayB
Whose visioned smiles were makingA
Our darkness bright as dayB
We vainly strive while weepingA
From their shining spirit trackA
Where they fled while we were sleepingA
To call those dear ones backA
-
Like the stars some power divides themC
From a world of want and painD
They are there but daylight hides themC
And we look for them in vainD
For a while we dwell with sadnessE
On the beauty of that dreamF
-
Then turn and hail with gladnessE
The light of morning's beamF
-
So when memory's power is wringingA
Our lonely hearts to tearsE
Dim forms around us bringingA
That brightened former yearsE
Fond looks and low words spokenG
Which those dreamy days could boastH
Rise till the spell be brokenG
We forget that they are lostI
-
But when the hour of darkness rollsE
Like heavy night awayB
And peace is stealing o'er our soulsE
Like the dawn of summer dayB
The dim sweet forms that used to blessE
Seem stealing from us tooJ
We loved them but joy's sunninessE
Hath hid them from our viewJ
-
Oh could day beam eternallyK
And Memory's power ceaseE
This world a world of light would beK
Our hearts were worlds of peaceE
-
But dreams of joy return with nightL
And dwell upon the pastM
And every grief that clouds our lightL
Reminds us of the lastM
