I heard the swallow sing in the eaves and roseA
All in a strange delight while others sleptB
And down the creaking stair alone tip toesA
So carefully I creptB
-
The house was dark with silly blinds yet drawnC
But outside the clean air was filled with lightD
And underneath my feet the cold wet lawnC
With dew was twinkling brightD
-
The cobwebs hung from every branch and sprayE
Gleaming with pearly strands of laden threadF
And long and still the morning shadows layE
Across the meadows spreadF
-
At that pure hour when yet no sound of manG
Stirs in the whiteness of the wakening earthH
Alone through innocent solitudes I ranG
Singing aloud for mirthH
-
Till I had found the open mountain heathI
Yellow with gorse and rested there and stoodJ
To gaze upon the misty sea beneathI
Or on the neighbouring woodJ
-
That little wood of hazel and tall pineK
And youngling fir where oft we have loved to seeL
The level beams of early morning shineK
Freshly from tree to treeL
-
Through the denser wood there's many a poolM
Of deep and night born shadow lingers yetN
Where the new wakened flowers are damp and coolM
And the long grass is wetN
-
In the sweet heather long I rested thereO
Looking upon the dappled early skyP
When suddenly from out the shining airO
A god came flashing byP
-
Swift naked eager pitilessly fairO
With a live crown of birds about his headF
Singing and fluttering and his fiery hairO
Far out behind him spreadF
-
Streamed like a rippling torch upon the breezeQ
Of his own glorious swiftness in the grassR
He bruised no feathery stalk and through the treesQ
I saw his whiteness passR
-
But when I followed him beyond the woodJ
Lo He was changed into a solemn bullS
That there upon the open pasture stoodJ
And browsed his lazy fullS
