| But there under the dark eaves | C |
| of rain forest we found Broughtonia | D |
| its crimson petals aflame | E |
| its yellow throat veins hinting purple | F |

| rising to a sanguine corolla surrounded | G |
| by sepals as crinkled as mourning crepe | H |
| We followed a path lengthened slash by slash | I |
| the islanders swinging machetes in front of us | J |

| We were told how Broughton's hands trembled | K |
| when he sighted those orchids languishing | L |
| as he sketched his nervous pencil | F |
| exaggerated the crumpled edge of every bloom | M |

| We too had learned to exaggerate | N |
| That night in Montego Bay | O |
| we told the others we had seen dozens | B |
| in New York we said hundreds | P |

| Today we might have imagined the wind | Q |
| licking us back into the Gully | A |
| our hands as uninhibited as those petals | R |
