Rhyme Scheme: AB CDEF GHIJ KLFM NOBP QARSin memory of F C | A |
who died of AIDS complications | B |
- | |
But there under the dark eaves | C |
of rain forest we found Broughtonia | D |
its crimson petals aflame | E |
its yellow throat veins hinting purple | F |
- | |
rising to a sanguine corolla surrounded | G |
by sepals as crinkled as mourning crepe | H |
We followed a path lengthened slash by slash | I |
the islanders swinging machetes in front of us | J |
- | |
We were told how Broughton's hands trembled | K |
when he sighted those orchids languishing | L |
as he sketched his nervous pencil | F |
exaggerated the crumpled edge of every bloom | M |
- | |
We too had learned to exaggerate | N |
That night in Montego Bay | O |
we told the others we had seen dozens | B |
in New York we said hundreds | P |
- | |
Today we might have imagined the wind | Q |
licking us back into the Gully | A |
our hands as uninhibited as those petals | R |
No I can no longer imagine I choose not to | S |
