Broughtonia Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AB CDEF GHIJ KLFM NOBP QARS

in memory of F CA
who died of AIDS complicationsB
-
But there under the dark eavesC
of rain forest we found BroughtoniaD
its crimson petals aflameE
its yellow throat veins hinting purpleF
-
rising to a sanguine corolla surroundedG
by sepals as crinkled as mourning crepeH
We followed a path lengthened slash by slashI
the islanders swinging machetes in front of usJ
-
We were told how Broughton's hands trembledK
when he sighted those orchids languishingL
as he sketched his nervous pencilF
exaggerated the crumpled edge of every bloomM
-
We too had learned to exaggerateN
That night in Montego BayO
we told the others we had seen dozensB
in New York we said hundredsP
-
Today we might have imagined the windQ
licking us back into the GullyA
our hands as uninhibited as those petalsR
No I can no longer imagine I choose not toS
