California Madrigal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDE FFGG HHII JJBB KKCC

Oh come my beloved from thy winter abodeA
From thy home on the Yuba thy ranch overflowedA
For the waters have fallen the winter has fledB
And the river once more has returned to its bedB
-
Oh mark how the spring in its beauty is nearC
How the fences and tules once more reappearC
How soft lies the mud on the banks of yon sloughD
By the hole in the levee the waters broke throughE
-
All nature dear Chloris is blooming to greetF
The glance of your eye and the tread of your feetF
For the trails are all open the roads are all freeG
And the highwayman's whistle is heard on the leaG
-
Again swings the lash on the high mountain trailH
And the pipe of the packer is scenting the galeH
The oath and the jest ringing high o'er the plainI
Where the smut is not always confined to the grainI
-
Once more glares the sunlight on awning and roofJ
Once more the red clay's pulverized by the hoofJ
Once more the dust powders the outsides with redB
Once more at the station the whiskey is spreadB
-
Then fly with me love ere the summer's begunK
And the mercury mounts to one hundred and oneK
Ere the grass now so green shall be withered and searC
In the spring that obtains but one month in the yearC
