I keep thinking of times that are long pastA
Of a house in the Petersburg QuarterB
You had come from the steppeland Kursk ProvinceC
Of a none too rich mother the daughterB

You were nice you had many admirersD
On that distant white night we were sittingE
On your window sill looking from high onF
On the phantom like scene of the cityG

The street lamps like gauze butterflies flutteringE
Had been touched by the chill of the morningE
My soft words as I opened my heart to youH
Matched the slumbering vistas before usI

We were plighted with timid fidelityG
To the very same nebulous mysteryG
As the cityscape spreading unendinglyJ
Far beyond the Neva through the distancesK

In that far off impregnable wildernessI
Wrapped in springtime twilight etherealJ
Woodland glades and dense thickets were quiveringE
With mad nightingales' thunderous paeansL

Crazy resonant warbling ran riotM
And the voice of this plain looking songsterG
Sowed derangement ecstatic delightN
In the depth of the mesmerised copsewoodN

To those parts Night a barefoot vagabondN
Stole its way along ditches and fencesK
From our window sill after it taggingE
Was the trail of our cooed confidencesO
-
To the words of this colloquy echoingE
In the orchards beyond the tall palingsO
Spreading branches of apple and cherry treesO
Swathed themselves in their pearly white raimentN
-
And the trees like so many pale phantomsO
Waved their farewell along the road throngingE
To White Night that all seeing enchanterG
Who was now to North Regions withdrawingE
